To be honest, there wasn't a whole lot we could do from Eshkashem that wouldn't have cost us an arm and a leg. Our original plan was to hire a car and driver to take us through the beautiful Wakhan Corridor to Little Pamir, but that would have been USD$800!
Our next plan was to climb to the 4,500 metre base camp of Mt Noshaq, the tallest mountain in Afghanistan, but in mid-September the weather was already going to be too cold and unpredictable and we didn't have the right gear. Oh yeah, turns out there were undetonated landmines surrounding the path also!! Because of the security situation in Afghanistan we basically couldn't go any further afield by land either, due to government checkpoints and the threat of the Taliban... So instead we did a couple of day trips to explore nearby villages. Here I am pictured sweating my butt off while we hiked around 12km in the burning hot sun in my heavy, conservative outfit. 😭
