1 Year Ago Today: "1960s 20" A @zildjiancompany Ride buried for 1 year 2 months in these beautiful @puremichigan deciduous woods under about 2 ft. of primarily clay and sandy type soil. It went in with typical old A sounds, fairly warm with a loud, slightly piercing bell. A bit clangy with a few wonky overtones. I had also drilled three holes and installed rivets about 1 inch from the edge. I wasn't at all in love with the sound. Again, just too many clangy overtones. After 14 months in the ground, it came out a little different. It lost roughly 45% of the "wonk" and "clang" that it descended with. Over a years worth of dirt pressure, rain and a cold Michigan frost filled in some of the lathing and imperfections, slightly smoothing out those overtones. It is certainly dryer, with a more pronounced (and woodier) stick definition than before. I wouldn't say that it feels any different when struck (as did my first "Earth Aged" cymbal that I did a couple years back). It still feels a bit stiff, without a ton of wobble, as it did before the burial. The bell was the only largely noticeable aspect of the experiment. It is now not as piercing, and sounds full and rich played both with the tip and shoulder of the stick. 2 rivets had fully rusted out, with the 3rd barely hanging on. It fell out with the first full crash with a stick. Aesthetically, it emerged with a few water/soil stains and slight corrosion around the rivet holes. Also dirty 😉 #buriedcymbal I'd say this cymbal due to it's size (20"), warmish sensitivity and nice woody stick definition would make this a fine low volume ride. Looking forward to putting new rivets back in!"
