There are people out there fighting this, and it’s more than just interviews! Military, and potential military are outraged. Dylan Kohere , an 18 year old transgender in the ROTC filed a lawsuit against the ban. He believes strongly in fighting for our country, and is fighting for his right to do so. Dylan is also physically and mentally fit for duty, but his gender identity is what puts him at risk of not following what he wants to do. Drew Layne, a 16 year old, wants to enlist in the Air Force, and was listed as a plaintiff on the same lawsuit. This lawsuit was alongside Sergeant Catherine Schmid, and a few others. “In a statement, Staff Sergeant Catherine Schmid, one of the plaintiffs, said, the ban is ‘disrespectful and dishonourable’.” (www.aljazeera.com) This is what Drew Layne has to say on the issue. “‘In my experience anyone who is meeting the necessary requirements should be able to serve openly.’ He wanted to serve because his family has a military background, he said. ‘I think the ban would affect a lot of people’s futures. They would like to serve and protect their homeland, and it’s basically cutting out people’s futures and plans. I wanted to be part of this lawsuit to be a voice for myself and others who want to serve their country.’” (Daily Beast) These people are passionate about our country, and will do anything to fight for it. They are dedicated, and are just like you and me.
