I went to see my PCP today (for the water in my ear situation). Not only did I have a super validating visit, but I was reminded that this is the very office where my #transitionjourney began! .
In June 2017; during an annual check-up, my Doc asked if I wanted my period to go away. This led to a conversation about being trans followed by a referral to the most highly regarded #endocrinologist in Louisville. He should have had a 5 month wait, but I got an appt 2 days later!
Fast forward...My Doc knew I wanted top surgery, and we’d seen each other after my consult with Dr. Gallagher, but I hadn’t seen her since getting a surgery date, or having the surgery.
So, when she walked in, we started chatting about why I was there today and she abruptly stopped the conversation with an excited, “wait — did you have your surgery??”; me — “yes!”
Doc “it looks so good? When?”
Me “may 8, you want to see?”
Doc “yes!!! It looks so good!!!”
Me ☺️😊🤗🙌💪 [takes off shirt]
She checked out my incisions, we talked about my nipples, the recovery and Dr. Gallagher. I showed her before/after pics and some other #instagram uploads. It was awesome, and so incredibly validating for my #pcp to be so thrilled for me. .
THIS IS HOW HEALTHCARE SHOULD BE! .
Until I found this Doctor’s office, I hated going to the doctor. It felt scary and always broke my spirit. I hated that I couldn’t hide my anatomy, and worse, I’d have to answer questions pertaining to it. When was your last period? Is there a chance you might me pregnant? When was your last Pap smear? Shit — I didn’t keep track of that, or the period. I hated being reminded of it. 🤢
But, despite being constantly misgendered in Norton’s system (because I haven’t updated my license yet, and their system only allows for Ms. or Mr. based on legal gender markers).. this office has called me He/Him and made me feel safe, heard and validated. Thank you Dr. Hawley and staff!
