Food numbers aren't the only important numbers to keep track of when dieting for weight loss. Weight and body composition numbers are also important. Because working out can add muscle mass, which is more dense than fat, at some point during your weight loss journey your weight may plateau or even go up a bit. BUT FEAR NOT!

By tracking your body fat percentage too you will be able to tell what's truly happening with your body. It's very possible for the scale to hardly budge and you still be losing body fat. If this happens, muscle mass is being added as body fat is being taken away. So as long as your body fat % is decreasing, you're moving in a healthier direction.

INSPIRATIONAL PSA: The scale and it's numbers do not define you. The scale doesn't measure the quality of your soul, simply the total weight of all the molecules that make up your body. In saying that, there's no excuse for not attempting to become healthier if you recognize a health problem your weight and eating habits have caused, especially when there are so many opportunities and methods in doing so. 💥 This was the end of the last circuit I did for my workout Tuesday other day!💥 Creating circuits of your exercises is a great way to build endurance and be more efficient with your time when working out ⏳💪 Here I did T-bar rows and barbell rows (not pictured) followed by battle ropes, kettlebell swings and lateral bench hops! Definitely got my heart rate up and killed me at the end!

Flexible dieting is another strategy to improve body composition and has become fairly popular in the fitness world. This is the dieting technique I follow myself as it allows for literally any food under the sun (within limits of course); very college student friendly.

If It Fits Your Macros (IIFYM) tracks macronutrients specifically (fats, carbs, proteins), and allows for freedom in your diet. The end goal of each day is the hit your calculated requirement of each macro, meaning if it fits within your macros you can eat it! Simple!

IIFYM in its most basic form is this:
1. Calculated TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) based on body weight and daily activity level
2. Calculated Macros in a ratio that help you reach your goals
3. Tracking Macros to meet the required daily amount of each nutrient (and therefore calories) according to your goals.

Flexible dieting is not only flexible (duh), it's also very sustainable with little to no "cheat meals" required because you're already eating the foods you love while working towards your goals. Sounds too good to be true doesn't it?

I’m at my happiest when I am running. This is me completing my 6th half-marathon. It was definitely a tough run for me as it was my first time back running after taking a years break. There were moments where I wanted to throw in the towel and quit but I kept telling myself just one more mile. It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you are or if you can run without stopping. For a long time the fitness world looked at fats as the most disgraceful thing you could put in your body. Nowadays we know processed carbs like white bread, pastas, and sugary cereals contribute more to unhealthy weight gain and obesity than fats from whole foods. Fats are filling, while processed carbs are easily overeaten.

A good strategy to eating is finding whole foods/meals that are difficult to overeat. If you find your salads aren't satisfying your hunger, don't be afraid to add avocados or nuts. Keep in mind however, fats are more calorie dense than any other nutrient (9/gram) so servings need to be small -> don't eat a whole bag of almonds or pour a cup of olive oil on your salad. Even though fats are more filling no one is immune to overeating them.

While eating cleaner can help save more calories for your weight loss goals, portion sizes still need to be in check. After all, meats, rice, and fruits still hold calories.

If you don't have a scale to measure exactly what you need, know that a general rule to each meal you make should have:
1. A portion of protein (lean meat or fish) roughly the size of your palm
2. A fist sized portion of carbs (rice or potatoes)
3. Fill the rest with your favorite vegetables
Any other cravings should be eaten more sporadically. Fruits can help curb sugar cravings, and nuts can help curb cravings for fatty foods.

Let the produce section be your best friend. Get in the habit of avoiding foods with labels as much as possible and you'll save calories every time. We all hit up the fast foods now and again but if you know what to order when you go out you can minimize the damage and still enjoy yourself. Look at what's on the menu and choose the foods that are as close to what's available in nature as possible. Meat, veggies, and fruits are all perfectly fine. It's the processed buns, tortillas, cheese and toppings that pose problems. Trade regular sodas and energy drinks for their sugar free options, or grab some fruits and nuts as an energizing snack.

After having 1 workout in the past 8 days due to my chronic illness (sinus infection + strep = death) I went in today and woke everything back up with a full upper body session. Nothing heavy or crazy volume, just reestablishing my mind-muscle connection, controlling the weight and emphasizing the squeeze at the top of each rep. Hit each area for 2-3 sets of about 12-15 reps, keeping intensity just high enough to keep a sweat. -
After being sick or being out of the gym for a stretch of time many people want to go in and wreck everything in their path but that does more harm than good. Practice taking the time to care for yourself and your body when you need to!

An Amazon book search for "weight loss" pulls up 100,000+ results on the subject, with a vast majority of them promising you an immaculate 6 pack of abs with as little effort as possible. Whether it be going vegan, using diets like Mediterranean & Paleo, or even as far fetched as eating based on your blood type (the list goes on and on and on...and on), with very little of these claims having any scientific backing whatsoever. HOWEVER there are some tried and true methods bodybuilders, fitfreaks, and the every day person can use to manipulate their bodies through dieting. I've been MIA this week due to being pretty sick. With the normal sniffles and headaches I'd still be in the gym each day but my body has been very achey and drained of energy while dealing with this. So I'm listening to my body, drinking plenty of water and doing my best to get plenty of rest. If you've been feeling like this lately I'd suggest you do the same! Listening to your body is extremely important!

Had a great back/delt session this morning. Missing every football game but 1 because of work had me very fired up, so naturally I destroyed every weight I put on the bar today. Shown is my drop set exercise I like to do from time to time:
I put 150lbs on the landmine in this order (45,10,25,10,25,10,25). Doing 8-10 reps and dropping a plate for each set, no rest in between. Talk about a BURN. -
