Day #9: Thurs. April 19/18
Walking distance = 10.35km
Walking time = 2:17
First off, I'm happy to say that I didn't get any need bug notes in last night's albuergue! However, last night there was some other action. Carol woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom on the lower level at 4am. Unfortunately, she misstepped on the last marble step and fell down 🤕. I woke up to go check her out and it looks like a lateral ankle sprain, so I guess that's the best case scenario.
We had an earlier start this morning, got a good breakfast in us and were determined to find the yellow arrows. We knew today would be a shorter day so that we could explore the wonderful city of Tomar.
We were able to get the last two beds in the Hostel 2300 and set off to explore Tomar.
Thanks to Caterina, a friend from Toronto (but originally from Tomar), she introduced me to her BF Zezinha. I had lunch with her and her daughter Maria. They were kind enough to treat me to lunch and prepared info of sites to see during my one day stay. Coincidentally we ran into Caterina's sister, who is also the mayor of Tomar!
I enjoyed walking around this beautiful city and got to see the Templar castle & Convento Cristo, Mata Nacional dos Sete Montes, church of Santa Maria do Olivia, Capella de Santa Iría.
I ended the day with Carol enjoying the riverfront and dipping my feet into the Río Nabao which felt great. There was a kayaker nearby who invited me to try out his kayak, which just proved to be that I need to work on my balance. All in all a nice break day and I got to enjoy a great city that I would love to come back to!
Carol will be staying another day in Tomar to rest her ankle. So I'll be venturing out solo from Tomar to Alvaiazere, which will be about 33km 😯. Once again I'm excited to head out, with a mix of some nerves. All my original pilgrim family members have parted ways and it's time to add some new family members.
Looking forward to a goodnight of rest to be ready for tomorrow!
