Day 28. Still working on Rose 32 No. 4 today. The little coda thing at the end always throws my students off-it almost ends up being the worst part of the etude. For me, it's just the trills. I'm a notoriously slow triller, so I have to carefully choose how many trills I plan to do (in this case three) and practice slow to fast. You want to do the same number of trills on both even though the second one is much easier to trill faster. Have you ever planned and counted your trills? Or are you just saying a prayer and wiggling your finger really fast? Which way do you think leads to greater success in the end? 😂 #theresabetterway #100daysofpractice #clarinet #tmea

Day 27! Practiced early today after my first masterclass at Hendrickson HS 🙃, because I get to go see a @lolaaustin_ show tonight! Worked on the other bass technical etude (Rose 32 No. 4) today. I LOVE this etude. My students often work on it as a summer project. And recording yourself is soooo good for practicing it. The biggest challenge for me are the long phrases stacked on top of each other and consistency of articulation. I like to catch the breath in m. 16 in time, so I have to *gracefully* rush beat 4 of m. 15, and then enter without an accent after the breath in time. Here I did it with modest success. Still needs work! #100daysofpractice #clarinet #justbreathe #tmea

Day 26. Long day; so tired. I shelved Region Music for the night and spent my whole practice on the devil's horn. I have a bunch of gigs coming up on e-flat plus it seems like I can't go a year without a student falling madly in love with this out of tune beast of a toy instrument. I guess I should thank them-they make me practice it. Oh the efer, I give it a hard time but I love the damn thing. When I practice it everything is with a drone. Pitch is wacky and also easily manipulated so you have to constantly be aware and assess pitch. Btw, when you're playing alone (i.e. Region Band auditions) I can still tell if you're out of tune! In music school we are trained to recognize the correct size of intervals! Make sure to always adjust your horn and work on pitch outside of ensemble playing! @hans.hunter #drone #notthatkindofdrone #100daysofpractice #clarinet #tmea #eflatclarinet

All-State Sectionals start next week!!! #roadtostate #tmea #allstatechoir
A Cappella members STRONGLY encouraged to attend.

#regionetudetip no. 2 - this is for all three #etudes. If you slow down and learn just 2 measures a day from each etude (6 total per day) you'll know EVERYTHING in less than 3 weeks! Don't go too fast when you're learning the #music. If you learn it too hastily, you'll be layering mistake upon mistake. Plus, if 2 measures is all you need to do each day, you can learn it in a really deep way, not just a surface-level knowledge. In just 10 minutes those two measures can go from totally new to really, really comfortable. .

More than just a section. The #mnhs saxophone section is a family. I've had so much fun working with these guys the last two weeks! #teachersofinstagram #🎷 #saxophone #musicians @mnhsband #yamahasaxophone #tmea #tmeaallstate #practice #thejuiceisworththesqueeze #detailsmatter

Day 25. This is the face of someone who has realized something they thought was going to be easy is not. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Rose 40 No. 15, you have my attention and my respect. I started off my practice by reading about the original etude book (Gavinies 24 Matinees for Violin). A violinist would play this etude to work on bowings, and they were originally written for new bowing techniques to go with advances bow models (think Klose method for us). I listened to a bunch of violinists practice videos too. All in all it helped for the style and perspective. Then I got to work on m. 33 to the end. This is m. 42-46; the really awkward line containing the tritone. Going from the minor third to the tritone to the larger intervals I had to isolate them and sing them A LOT. It's important there that you hear the intervals before you move your fingers. #100daysofpractice #TMEA #clarinet #bassclarinet

#music subconsciously teaches us everyday #skillsforlife #tmea

Day 24. I started on the Bass Clarinet technical etudes today. Rose 40 No. 15, my initial thoughts are, I really hope you don't have a bass with one of those super high, not ergonomically placed A keys. If you do...I just don't even know. Go get it adjusted? This etude will be really difficult if the spring tension and key heights aren't *just* right on your instrument. Also, after my first night of practice I have no idea about the phrase and I can already tell I'm going to change my mind a million times. It just meanders around the mid-register, the longest slow build EVER into m. 55 maybe? I don't know, and I don't know if Hite even had a better idea, this etude lacks the typical phrasing directions of the rest of this edition. In short, I've got a lot of work to do before I'm ready to explain this one to a student. 😕 #100daysofpractice #TMEA #clarinet #timetopractice

🌟Not the best recording, wrong breathing, rough notes, some squeaks (it usually happens on clarinet but anyways), rushing, dynamic lost, but I believe practice will move me up to the top of the stage
It's also my first real Region audition (not the easy Jr high ones) so I'm really excited for that:)

And It was the moment I finally realized that I seriously need a thumb-port (it hurts really bad😰)

Day 23. Still cleaning! Rose 32 No. 18 second half has some tricky leaping patterns that will be hard going faster. I used different rhythm patterns to practice quick changes between notes and to clean intervals. This is m. 40-41. I admit I didn't post yesterday but that certainly doesn't mean I didn't play (8 hours of lessons 😱) #100daysofpractice #clarinet #TMEA #goals #yayband

#regionetudetip no. 1 - etude 26. This etude is hard because of all the nasty #intervals - you need to learn how to voice from a high note to a low one. How do you practice this? Simple - very, very slowly, and WITHOUT articulating. Isolate the nasty interval and push past the high note into the low note. Spend a few minutes on each interval, making sure the airstream doesn't back off and the lower note doesn't crack. This is ABSOLUTELY necessary if you want to play this etude smoothly. Without good voicing, it'll sound like you're running down a stairwell playing the #sax... not that I have any experience with that. .

Today was the final day of a very rewarding two weeks of summer master classes at Oak Ridge High School! A talented group of students at a very high level band program. We covered the history of the trombone and it's role in music from the renaissance to the present, deconstructed the fundamentals, worked on all state music, learned practice methods, explored style and character, and learned exercises that will carry them through the year and help expand their technique so that they can measure their progress day by day. .
.
Don't forget (for those of you with Instagram)-If you can't play it with a good sound, then you can't play it!

.
(Use your trombone as a light saber at your own risk 😊)
