Confession time 😱 For years I used over-the-counter sleep aids. Melatonin, diphenhydramine, unisom, etc. I’m going to be really honest…. one of the hardest parts of pregnancy for me was learning to sleep without these sleep aids! I would use them every night and got to the point to where I couldn’t fall asleep without them. I realized that even melatonin was detrimental to my health and my baby’s health so o made the commitment to stop 🛑 when I became pregnant.
Did you know that precious “natural” melatonin is not good for you? I bet you didn’t. Melatonin is a hormone that correlates with your sleep cycles💤. By taking melatonin in supplement form, you are engaging in hormone replacement therapy❗️Administering hormones can shut off your body’s feedback loop that it naturally uses to regulate hormones… if you mess this up, you can effectively mess up many other hormonal processes in your body 😯
Okay so melatonin is bad but antihistamine sleep aids certainly can’t harm you right? Nope, sleep aids like benadryl and unisom are definitely not good either 🤦🏼♀️. Especially since they are chronically overused and abused. he Food and Drug Administration requires instructions on OTC sleep med packages to tell consumers to see their doctor if insomnia persists for more than two weeks. A recent study found that many Americans use these types of sleep aids daily and for longer than 1 year!!! I can honestly say that I have the best sleep of my life now a days 🙌🏻. Seriously it is amazing… I fall asleep and sleep like a rock all night. For the first time in almost a decade, I wake up feeling well-rested every morning. Want to know why?
