A Split Ion Tail for Comet Lovejoy E45.

What's happened to Comet Lovejoy? In the pictured image, a processed composite, the comet was captured early this month after brightening unexpectedly and sporting a long and intricate ion tail. Remarkably, the typically complex effect of the Sun's wind and magnetic field here caused the middle of Comet Lovejoy's ion tail to resemble the head of a needle. Comet C/2017 E4 (Lovejoy) was discovered only last month by noted comet discoverer Terry Lovejoy. The comet reached visual magnitude 7 earlier this month, making it a good target for binoculars and long duration exposure cameras. What's happened to Comet Lovejoy (E4) since this image was taken might be considered even more remarkable -- the comet's nucleus appeared to be disintegrating and fading as it neared its closest approach to the Sun two days ago.

24 Jul 2018. Centreline
🚙
Take your pick, if you please, as to which centreline my title is referring to. The centreline of the Braidwood Road, or the centreline of the sky, in the form of the Milky Way? It took me several stops to find a location where this road lined up with the Milky Way in just the way I wanted. I was fortunate to have only one vehicle pass through while I was shooting here, which isn’t usually the case on this road. On weekends it’s particularly busy, so maybe it was quiet due to this being on a weeknight.
🌌
A few weeks back I was listening to the Photog Adventures podcast @photo had ventures , on which one of the gents commented about how hard it must be for Southern Hemisphere folk to compose photos that include a terrestrial foreground, as well as the Milky Way at this time of year. I understood his point because the Milky Way passes almost directly overhead here in my part of Australia during these winter months, but I took it as a challenge to create some images with the Milky Way’s core riding high over an interesting earthly scene. 🌟🌲
The leaves on the trees have been blurred here due to the exposure time of 30 seconds for each photo and the strong wind that was blowing. Mars is very bright up at the top of the picture, but still not at its brightest for this year. If you know the southern skies at all, you might be able to make out the Southern Cross towards the bottom, next to the dark area known as the Coal Sack Nebula.
📷
Seven photos were taken to create this final image, with each picture in the sequence overlapping the one before it. The settings I used for each shot were: Canon EOS 6D camera, Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 lens @ f/2.4, 15-second exposure @ ISO 6400.

This is Aaron @hinstsofheaven again with my third and final photo for my takeover. Astrophotography is mostly a night time venture, and I often find myself alone in the dark of the night. As often as I can, I take others with me. Recently, I was honored with the company of my father, my brother (@roguefx), my cousin, and my wife (@adoptionjourney). We braved rugged roads under Bortle 1 skies facing our fears as we captured God’s beautiful heavens and earth.

These are my first attempts at a Milky Way panorama taken just a few days apart near July’s New Moon. The top was taken on the bed of the Great Salt Lake at the Spiral Jetty. The below is at Balanced Rock near Buhl, Idaho. Each is a stitch of about 12 photos (20 sec at ISO 3200) overlapping across the horizon. I used my Canon EOS 77d with the Rokinon 14mm f2.8 lens.

Thank you for entertaining my takeover for today. I will continue to post more of my captures at @hintsofheaven. May the heavens smile upon your cameras!

M82: Starburst Galaxy with a Superwind
Also known as the Cigar Galaxy for its elongated visual appearance, M82 is a starburst galaxy with a superwind. In fact, through ensuing supernova explosions and powerful winds from massive stars, the burst of star formation in M82 is driving the prodigous outflow of material. Evidence for the superwind from the galaxy's central regions is clear in this sharp composite image, based on data from small telescopes on planet Earth. The composite highlights emission from filaments of atomic hydrogen gas in reddish hues. The filaments extend for over 10,000 light-years. Some of the gas in the superwind, enriched in heavy elements forged in the massive stars, will eventually escape into intergalactic space. Triggered by a close encounter with nearby large galaxy M81, the furious burst of star formation in M82 should last about 100 million years or so. M82 is 12 million light-years distant, near the northern boundary of Ursa Major.

Those 2 mins 23 secs on 08/21/17. 📷 by #aaany_astrophotography member Gowrishankar L., @astro.gordonfreeman .

“As we come to the end of 2017, I was recollecting all the awesome celestial events that occurred this year and the Total Solar Eclipse has to be hands down the best event I’ve ever experienced. That 2 mins 23 mins were too short but during those precious minutes - everything around me came to a stand still - people started crying, cheering and laughing, kids were shouting and having fun. I’ve never seen human emotions at such a level in any event. That moment where it looked like a black hole in the sky was something I’ll never forget in my life. The pictures do no justice to what one experienced out there. 📷: 08/21/17 11:39 MST”

About this image: this is a 5 image composite of the totality which then was blended in Photoshop CC to smoothen out the Corona filaments.

Are year ago today I was sitting in the hayfield in Idaho along with Patty and our friends Scott & Ellen. We journeyed 1100 miles and camped for four days in this hay field in anticipation of this epic event. Some would say that life changing is an overstatement... to those who would, I would say they must not have ever experienced one of these magical events. The next one here in North America will be in April of 2024. All I can tell you is take the time to gather up the family and do whatever it takes to see it. And as my friend Scott said, the difference between 99% totality and 100% totality is 1000%! I shot these photos with my @nikonusa D750 attached to my @celestron_telescopes 900mm f/9 refractor mounted on my @meadeinstruments LDX75 tracking mount.

ETERNAL LIGHT - There shall forever be light. Even as darkness falls a light will shine in the night sky. Our way will always be lit no matter how dark the world becomes.

On this night it never got fully dark. Be it the light of the moon or the dim glow of the sun in the northern hemisphere night sky. Taken at about 2am in the morning but not alone on the beach. A stealthy bunch of photographers searching for an elusive natural phenomenon.

Hello again! It's Ryan ( @rbalephoto ) with my second post of the day for my @universetoday takeover!

This is a photo I took last weekend of the Delta IV Heavy launch carrying the Parker Solar Probe for NASA on Sunday, August 12th. This was one of my remote cameras I setup around the launchpad with my media outlet @spaceflightnews just north-west of the Mobile Service Tower, which is what surrounds/protects the rocket until it's ready to launch. I set this camera to capture just the 3 main RS-68a engines of the Delta Heavy with the holddown base in the foreground to really capture the intensity and beauty of what powers this rocket off the ground. This was hands-down my favorite photos from this launch and may be my favorite of all time, I couldn't be more pleased with how it turned out.
Note: This photo was achieved by having credentials with a news outlet, no 'ordinary' civilian can get this close without special credentials.
Gear: Canon 80D, Canon 55-250mm (photo at 183mm)
