The Mets play host to the Tigers today, as they look to bounce back from a sloppy loss yesterday. Chris Flexen will be on the mound for New York from sunny Port St. Lucie.
Terry Collins will roll out a fairly normal lineup for the Mets. Jose Reyes will get his second start of the spring and first at the shortstop posistion. Michael Conforto, batting second and playing right field, will look to continue his torrid spring. In two games so far, Conforto is 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, as he makes a statement that he’s not the same struggling player he was last summer. Dominic Smith gets his first start of the spring, as he’ll bat eighth and play fist base. Smith has two at bats during the Grapefruit League, and has driven in a run with bases-loaded walk yesterday, but is yet to knock a hit.
On the bump for the Mets Sunday will be Chris Flexen, a right-handed Flexen, originally one of the Mets prospects to be dealt to the Reds in the Jay Bruce trade last August, has never pitched past Single-A ball. Last year with St. Lucie, Flexen tossed to a 3.56 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 25 starts and 134.0 innings pitched. He only allowed 6 home runs for the season. While Flexen isn’t a blue chip prospect on Mets fans’ radars, he could actually amount to something in a few years.
The Tigers will send out Matt Boyd to the hill, and Boyd, a lefty, actually pitched against the Mets last season. On Aug. 6, Boyd got the win against New York when he threw to a line of 5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 2 HR. Jay Bruce and Curtis Granderson, neither of whom are in the lineup today, went deep off Boyd.
First pitch today will be thrown at 1:10 p.m., and the game can be seen on PIX11. LGM!
