If you ever hear me singing the praises of the Starting Strength model for novice trainees, that’s because IT WORKS. There is no program out there that makes better use of the novice effect for brand new lifters. Here are Phillip’s progress numbers for his first 3 months of strength training:
3x5 squat: 145 ➡️ 280
3x5 bench press: 135 ➡️ 180
1x5 deadlift: 175 ➡️ 315
3x5 press: 75 ➡️ 120
5x3 power clean: 85 ➡️ 150
These kind of numbers are not the exception but the expectation for young and healthy adult males using this program. However all good things must come to an end, and unfortunately this pace of progress can’t continue indefinitely. Phillips is near the end of his novice linear progression, and soon we’ll be transitioning to some more intermediate programming techniques, where progress will continue at a slower rate.
Also keep an eye out for Malcolm Landrieu @a5neakynarwhal who will be making his heavyweight open strongman debut at Alabama’s Strongest Man this August! I’ll be starting him on a training program this week to help him get ready to play with the big boys!
