Little change of scenery today. Simulated the last man standing log event on my last heavy day before the contest. Started at the opening weight of 220 and worked up through the competition attempts. Only worked up to 280 because we’re saving the PR for the contest, but 280 felt smoother than it ever has before so I’m certain there’s a big PR in the works.
No bench press today, but just did some banded pushups for light accessory work.

Last heavy deadlifts before showtime today to kick off peak week. Worked up to my planned opener at 655 and hit it for 3 singles. Opener is set, and now it’ll be all about picking the right jumps to hit the biggest number I can.
Took it easy on squats with a couple light sets of 20 goblet squats. No reason to do anything heavy on an uncontested lift this close to competition. If you’re like me and don’t exactly have the greatest hip mobility in the world, goblet squats are nice because the counterbalance of the kettlebell held in front of you can really help with getting deeper into the squat.
One more heavyish log day later this week and then all that’s left will be light conditioning, making weight, and resting.

Nothing too heavy this morning, just getting in some conditioning and working quick transitions for the carry and drag. This was my last of 4 progressively heavier 40-ft runs. Sandbag is 225 and kegs are 250 and 275. I expect the Cary and drag to be one of my two best events for this contest. Gotta make it count.
Moderate weight sled pushes for a little more conditioning after the carries. Just two weeks to go and all the strength work is in the books. Only 3 training sessions left. This coming week is peak week, which means I’ll be finding my opener for the deadlift and working up through the contest jumps on the log. Next weekend will be more light conditioning and then it’ll be time to shut things down and rest up in order to be at 100% on game day.

Hit some singles on the axle on my second to last press day before the show. 4x1 out of the rack at 92% (265) moved nice and quick. Nothing too strenuous, just getting in a little heavy-ish work leading into peak week.
After that was 4x4 close grip bench press at 84% (295). Only 4 more sessions to go before deload. Next week I’ll find an opener for the 18” deadlift and run through a simulated last man standing log event.
Coming up on 2 weeks to go, some big PRs are in the works, and the anticipation is building. Saying I’m excited for this one would be an understatement!

I’m not totally sure what to call these. Paused front box squats? Front box paused squats? Box paused front squats?
Whatever they’re called, they’re part of coach’s sinister plan to make me suck less at stones and be less of a bitch. Did them for 4x5 at 88% (360). Trying to work on that power out of the hole from a dead stop.
Then hit my 18” deadlift speed work with 8x2 at 60% (425) plus light bands. Everything felt nice and smooth. Plan is to hit a few singles at my opener next week, then shut it down and rest.

If you ever hear me singing the praises of the Starting Strength model for novice trainees, that’s because IT WORKS. There is no program out there that makes better use of the novice effect for brand new lifters. Here are Phillip’s progress numbers for his first 3 months of strength training:

3x5 squat: 145 ➡️ 280
3x5 bench press: 135 ➡️ 180
1x5 deadlift: 175 ➡️ 315
3x5 press: 75 ➡️ 120
5x3 power clean: 85 ➡️ 150

These kind of numbers are not the exception but the expectation for young and healthy adult males using this program. However all good things must come to an end, and unfortunately this pace of progress can’t continue indefinitely. Phillips is near the end of his novice linear progression, and soon we’ll be transitioning to some more intermediate programming techniques, where progress will continue at a slower rate.
Also keep an eye out for Malcolm Landrieu @a5neakynarwhal who will be making his heavyweight open strongman debut at Alabama’s Strongest Man this August! I’ll be starting him on a training program this week to help him get ready to play with the big boys!

Last heavy yoke day, contest weight for contest distance (800 for 40 ft). Didn’t get the run I wanted, but I’m not too worried about it. I’ve done this weight and more for decent times with no drops, so I know the speed and strength are both there. Just went slightly over the line between order and chaos on this run and couldn’t hold it together. Training is the time to push the limits and make mistakes, and now I know what it feels like to push it just a little too hard. Won’t make that mistake on game day.
Then my stone woes continued. 285 to 54” was no problem, but failed twice at loading 330 to 50”. My keys to success on stones:
1. Suck less
2. Be less of a bitch
Definitely still working on mastering the art of not being a bitch.
3 weeks out from game day now, and just received the last 3 weeks of my peak. Turns out I actually have two more heavyish weeks and not one, so 6 more training sessions to go. Almost time to see all the work pay off.

Coach had me working with a barbell for the first time in ages today for my overhead speed work. Once you’ve gotten used to pressing axles and logs, a skinny barbell feels weird as hell. But got the work done with 8x3 at 65% (190).
Then moved on to bench press for 4x5 at 88% (310) to a 2-board. Relatively light session today, which was just as well after heavy squats and volume deads on Tuesday. Counting down the weeks until game day. 4 training sessions to go.

Last heavy squats and last volume deadlifts before game day. Squats were 4x4 at 88% (440), deadlifts were 3x8 at 75% (530) from 18”. Less than a month out and only 5 more training sessions to go.
