SHORT REVIEW: Well, this British guy is like the love of my mother’s life – apart from my father of course. And by “transitive property” I love him too; I will always will. He was the drummer and main lead singer of one of my favourite bands, Genesis and with this first solo album he won my heart definitely. He and Genesis are the soundtrack of my life. Not only they were played repeatedly at home when I was little but also because both Genesis and Phil’s songs were the soundtrack of many home-made VHSs with recorded family baptisms, birthday parties and family vacations. All of his songs bring so many good memories of my life. In this particular record, each one of the songs are unique in their own way. The lyrics in all of them are meaningful, deeply sentimental, and with this record he started to show what he ended up being - the master of tasteful ballads. “You Know What I Mean” and “If Leaving Me Is Easy” are probably the most melancholic and heart-breaking songs ever. And what can I say about “In The Air Tonight”. The way it starts, in a very slow and mysterious way and at minute 3:40 the drum solo that breaks in and keeps on appearing as the song develops, makes it one of the best songs ever recorded. No wonder it has been sampled and covered by many well-known artists and referenced in many TV shows and movies. Long live Phil Collins.
