As I sat down with my friend today for lunch we got into the discussion about gun control. My friend owns an AR-15 and I ask myself do I feel safe with him owning that gun? The answer is absolutely yes. He's a responsible gun owner and I think him with a gun is more of an asset to the community then being a burden. I understand why people want gun control because if there are no guns people would not get shot. I honestly believe that most shootings occur due to mental illness and criminal behavior. I know a lot of school teachers that teach elementary students and they are always telling me that this or that kid will possibly be in jail later in life because of behavioral issues and lack of respect for authority. These things show up early on in life. I feel like teachers should be the first line of defense in spotting someone who may be unfit to have a weapon later in life. Starting in schools as early as elementry, at the end of the school year each teacher should have a layout of all their students and put an X next to their name if they see any troubles or issues that they may have. This should be done through K through 12 and when it is time for someone to buy a gun, look back at their records and if every single teacher has an X next to that students name, that person should not get a gun. This may have prevented the latest shooting at Douglas High School as all of his teachers saw something wrong and he even went to an alternative school for bad kids The majority of shootings by criminal and mentally ill can usually be predicted by the demeanor of the students growing up. Usually, not always. This is not a full proof plan but it's a start. Why not have both sides start here and eventually push for stricter gun laws if needed. Also our criminal justice system has to be tougher. What are your thoughts?
