During my downtime in Yellowstone (during the hours the park was way too crowded to be in) I spent some time at The Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone. I went to photograph the bears, but ended up spending a lot of time with the wolves, too.
This is Akela. Akela is named after the wolf pack leader from the story "The Jungle Book". She also has awesome amber colored eyes. She arrived at the center when she was 5 weeks old.
Don't think for a second that because these animals are captive that it makes them easy to photograph. It was pretty challenging finding compositions without distracting elements in the background. The center does a great job of making the wolf habitat as natural as possible, but getting the wolves to cooperate and pose in front of something that looks natural was a patience tester. Luckily, waiting long enough finally paid off and Akela cooperated a few times.
