This pregnancy has been challenging for me in ways that I never expected. But within each challenge comes a valuable lesson and I am so grateful for every single one of them.
Pregnancy and childbirth can be an amazing opportunity for a woman to deeply connect with herself and uproot things that may no longer be serving her. It is a time to reflect, slow down, and go within. It brings awareness to the body and to all the deep existential questions of our purpose. It can be a wonderful healing journey culminating with new birth as well as rebirth of that woman. A chance to connect with and integrate our own inner child along with the child we carry within us.
Fear seems to permeate the majorities collective consciousness surrounding childbirth. But when we learn to trust our bodies, surrender to the experience, and prepare ourselves mind and body for birth we can let fear go. The current medical model has turned birth into a prediction based phenomenon, where standard procedures are predicated on the likelihood that things can and will go wrong. And when fear is the basis of our decisions, these predictions become self fulfilling prophecy. The truth is that women have been giving birth naturally, in the wild even, since the dawn of our species. There is a time and place for necessary intervention but that should be a last resort and not the place to begin with.
This attitude towards birth models exactly what is happening in the collective. Instead of preparing for the future we are attempting to control it through predictions based on fear. Preparation is proactive, based on wisdom and learning, involves compassion and understanding, and is rooted in love. Prediction is reactive and based on fear of outcomes because the tendency is to focus on the negative rather than the positive possibilities. The mind has to be trained to distinguish the difference because it’s job is to keep us safe, especially from ourselves, but when given free range that safety becomes a cage built out of fear that separates us from our true potential.
