Should you see this movie if you don't believe in an afterlife? I don't think that's any reason to avoid it. This movie steers away from religion, which is wise. I don't think it's trying to sell you on the afterlife. Instead, it's telling a story about three people whose lives have become surrounded by death and, through this idea and (for them) presence of the hereafter, they are able to find each other and move on with their lives. There aren't any facts or proof or science, just the stories they tell and that we tell each other. There is the overwhelming pressure of one's moral values in relation to belief and with that comes the desire for hope and healing. And if belief gets you halfway there, well, can you really blame them? This movie has great performances by both Matt Damon and Cécile de France with a great score by Clint Eastwood himself. The piano tunes will have you tearing up in no time. At least, they will for me.
Shining Star: I've been defaulting to the soundtrack too many times now, but it really is a beautiful score. For a story that takes place more than a decade ago, I really connect with the effort to make current events relevant. The two that occur here being in 2004 and 2005, some seven months apart. Leave it to me to give the shining star to a tsunami.
