#TheStoriesBeginHere – With Tom, one of our All-Round Food & Beverage Waiters
A Rotterdam-native, Tom was born into hospitality. At the young age of 14, he was taken under the wing at his father’s restaurant where he quickly learned all the tips and tricks. Down-to-earth, friendly and good natured, Tom’s strong work ethic and determination coupled with his affable disposition have brought him a long way since then.
Whether during breakfast or at the Goldfinch Brasserie, he ensures all guests are pampered in True Waldorf style. A true team player, Tom fosters a solid team spirit - they say experience is the best teacher, but Tom prefers learning from the experiences from those around him. From The Netherlands to Germany to America to Portugal – we too hope we can learn from his experiences much longer.

#TheStoriesBeginHere – with Sylvia, our lovely Assistant Front of House Manager
Although Sylvia grew up in the beautiful Black Forest area in the South-West of Germany, Sylvia decided to spread her wings at a young age. They say good things come to those who wait, but Sylvia believes good things come to those who work hard and travel often. And this is exactly what she has done over the past few years. From Florida to Edinburgh and from Abu Dhabi to New York – each step of the way, she developed a stronger attraction for hospitality and a deeper passion for delivering exceptional guest experiences.
As our Assistant Front of House Manager, she pulls from the team’s diverse and unique skill set to push the True Waldorf Service to the next level.
Now an inhabitant of our beloved capital, Sylvia’s nomadic heart is still craving for new destinations. This is why, each month, Sylvia trades Amsterdam for new cities or countries to add to her list – even if just for one day.

#TheStoriesBeginHere – with Hélène, our Food & Beverage Management Trainee

Originally from France, Hélène spent the majority of her childhood in Canada, where she learned to speak English fluently. Her linguistic talent extends beyond English and French though – extensive travels (and perhaps a tiny flair for language) made her fluent in Spanish and with that done, learning Italian is next on the cards for our warm-hearted Food & Beverage Management Trainee. It is this passionate interest in people (and being able to speak to so many different people in their mother-tongue) that fueled her decision to trade her History of Art studies for a Bachelor ‘Manager de Restaurant’ at FERRANDI Paris, one of France’s most prestigious culinary schools.
Now in her final year and part of the wonderful Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam family, Hélène is learning all there is to know about managing a Food & Beverage department at the highest level.
When not working, you might find Hélène with her nose in a book – preferably one from Alfred de Musset – or with a ladle in her hand.

#TheStoriesBeginHere – with Rianne, another one of our wonderful Food & Beverage Management Trainees

At the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam, we are committed to making every dining experience unforgettable, whether inside or outside one of our restaurants. At the heart of these in-room dining experiences is our wonderful In-Room Dining team, of which Rianne is a valued member. From a light lunch or snack to something more substantial, Rianne makes sure all of our guests’ culinary wishes are catered to with endless grace and a genuine smile on her face.
Curious and always on the lookout for adventure, she’s particularly fond of venturing out in the seas on her surfboard or jumping out of an airplane for fun. Amongst other admirable qualities, we believe it is this fearless attitude that will continue to propel Rianne toward success.

#TheStoriesBeginHere – with Mary, one of our wonderful Room Attendants

You could stay with us several nights a year and still never meet Mary, and unfortunately – perhaps you never will. Quite like the stagehands at a play, Mary works her housekeeping magic from behind the scenes, ensuring your room is clean and comfortable throughout your stay. Her daily motivation is to bring the definition “home away from home” to life at the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam, one that we value greatly.
The key to Mary’s heart is likely attached to a spatula, Indeed, her free time is spent cooking for her husband and children, preferably a big pot of Kare-kare – a traditional dish from her home country, Philippines.

#TheStoriesBeginHere – with Laura, our Kitchen Coordinator Trainee

Behind every successful kitchen team is a wonderful Kitchen Coordinator Trainee to support them. From managing product inventory to ensuring all food & supplies are ordered, stocked and ready to be used – Laura does it all with a huge amount of passion and a smile on her face. The versatility of the job is fantastic, but she gets the greatest satisfaction from being able to watch & learn from the chefs in the kitchen, who are a big source of inspiration to her.
In addition to her love for food & hospitality, Laura adores music – live saxophone music in particular. And we aren’t really too surprised. Both food and music go a long way in creating ambiance – and coming from Brabant, hospitality and conviviality are in her DNA.

#TheStoriesBeginHere – with Louis, one of our Guest Service Agents

With two parents working in the hotel industry, Louis was pretty much born into hospitality – but, in fact, he chose it just as much as it chose him. He spent most of his youth in the idyllic Haute-Savoie region shadowing his parents & learning all the ins and the outs of the business, before further developing his skills at the Hotel Management School Maastricht.
Now a graduate, Louis puts his extensive experience and expertise into practice within our wonderful Front-of-House department. Always affable, always sincere and always willing to help, he provides our guests with a warm welcome and helps them get settled into their home away from home – making sure every detail has been carefully considered.

#TheStoriesBeginHere – with Tiago, our Bartender.
Growing up in Faro, Tiago’s career in mixology wasn’t one he initially had in mind for himself. From a young age, he dreamed about becoming a manager at a large corporation, but somewhere along the way he traded the classrooms for bars and the teachers for bartenders. He realised that while logic gets you from A to B, imagination will get you anywhere.
Indeed, it is the creativity that he enjoys most about his job as bartender in our Vault Bar. This, and the ability to learn about so many different cultures – be it through the unique local and foreign ingredients he chooses to work with or through all of our beloved guests he gets to connect with each and every day.

It's hard to see, but this mug says "together we rise" It was made by @frankielamar and was a surprise Mother's Day present from a dear friend who's one of the MANY I lean on in this journey. Thank you @debrakassoff #togetherwerise #myrabbi #paintingsbyellenlangford #thestoriesbeginhere #narrativepainting

Like my son is now, I was a voracious reader as a young person, and dreamed of writing fiction someday. I'd love to still, and try from time to time. But usually my stories come out this way. Here are this mornings attempts at short stories...nay poems? #paintingsbyellenlangford #thestoriesbeginhere #southernartist #narrativepainting

#TheStoriesBeginHere – with Hannah, one of our All-Round Food & Beverage Waitresses
“The early morning has gold in its mouth” or so the famous saying goes, but Hannah couldn’t agree more. Indeed, it’s her favorite time of the day – her chance to delight our guests with her smile and joyful attitude. Even if you’re not a morning person, you will be after our cheerful All-Round Food & Beverage Waitress serves you the perfect cup of coffee.
As a true hedonist, Hannah cherishes fun and joy above it all, be it from her travels to Asia or from a visit to the cinema.

#TheStoriesBeginHere – with Elmar, one of our Guest Service Agents

Born and raised in the southernmost of our 12 provinces, Elmar decided to trade the South for the North to join our Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam family. And we welcomed him with open arms. Always smiling, always courteous – Elmar goes above and beyond each and every day to ensure your experiences are unforgettable and your moments are memorable.
From a warm welcome to a pleasant goodbye – and everything in between – Elmar loves the diversity of the job, with no two days the same.
An avid airplane fan, he can tell you the airline and aircraft type just by showing him a photo. So the next chance we have to welcome you, don’t forget to challenge him.

#TheStoriesBeginHere – with Jesse, one of our Kitchen Apprentices

A Chef in the making, Jesse joined our kitchen team as Kitchen Apprentice only six months ago. He didn’t always have the ambition to be a chef, but once exposed to the wonderful world of gastronomy; he couldn’t imagine a life without it. With a passion for cooking and a hunger for knowledge, this talented youngster from Alphen aan den Rijn assists the kitchen team in cooking up culinary marvels day in and day out.
Currently enrolled in the very prestigious ‘Sterklas’ (The Dutch Culinary Institute), he dreams of one day following in the footsteps of our executive chef Sidney Schutte. Lucky enough to work alongside such experienced chefs and mentors at the age of 22, we wouldn’t be surprised if this dream comes true.

Meet our lovely beauty therapist Sara: "#TheStoriesBeginHere – with Sara, one of our Guerlain Spa Beauty Therapists.

From the time we are in elementary school, people ask us what we want to be when we grow up. Although most children don’t know at the time, for Sara the answer has always been the same; a beauty therapist. Although she went on to study economics initially, Sara luckily had the courage to follow her heart and intuition.
Born and raised in sunny Sardinia, Sara’s sole focus is to take care of others. Even more so than making people look good – indeed, Sara is a master at make-up – she wants to make people feel good. Always kind and caring, Sara excels in sports massages and deep tissue massages. Her in-depth knowledge of rehabilitative massage therapy, gained through her travels in Asia, make her a wonderful asset to our team.
Now living in Amsterdam, Sara enjoys exploring her new city through restaurants"
