Michelle returned to the Netherlands only six months ago, joining our Front of House Team in welcoming our guests.
After a 6-year adventure in New York, studying Hotel Management at New York University and the beginning of her career at The Waldorf Astoria in the Big Apple, she followed her roots back home.
With us, she spends her days creating unique experiences for our guests, ensuring each and every stay is flawless. She was born to provide True Waldorf Service as she thrives upon this; always looking for a small and special detail that inspires our guests to treasure the moment for their entire lives.
Who knows better how to create these moments than Michelle, who is always on the lookout for these experiences herself. Travelling and looking for the added value in life is her passion. This year she reached her own goal by visiting 25 countries in 25 years. We hope her desire to move abroad will hold back a little, so she can keep on complimenting to the visits of all of our guests at Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam.

Whether she is serving our delicious Afternoon-Tea in our Peacock Alley, delighting guests with a lovely dinner in @goldfinchbrasserie, or surprising people with beautiful cocktails in our @vaultbaramsterdam, as long as Maite may provide a smile to our guests, she shines in her job.
Maite became fascinated by high quality cuisine and high-end service the moment she moved to the capital Amsterdam. After her art studies in the south of Holland, she accepted her first job at restaurant Rijks at the Rijksmuseum as a waitress. This culinary and art filled environment planted the seed of working in the service industry instead of the world of art.
Inspiring guest chef visits and the use of a variety of ingredients from around the world drew Maite’s attention. One example, Margot Janse, introduced Maite to the African cuisine using ingredients like baobab, bushu and honeybush. It is the originality of these cuisines that energize Maite, to not only serve the dishes, but to tell the story of every component on their plate by traveling the world and knowing its origin.

Now she gets to learn from the international environment in the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam, where she recently passed level two of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust.
We hope she has many more stories to tell about the heritage of wine and dishes to our guests….

#TheStoriesBeginHere - with Peter, one of our Concierges.

One thing is for sure, Peter – our newest asset in our Concierge team, is born for his job. Peter – an ‘Amsterdammer’ through and through, creates bespoke experiences for our guests, arranging the impossible and catering to each individual guest.
Whether it is a last minute reservation in a fully booked restaurant, a catered Jet or tickets for a museum, Peter knows his way around our capital and will make sure to deliver tailor-made itineraries for any request.
According to Peter, “being a concierge is not only a job, it is a lifestyle”. By attending the latest events and newest restaurants he is able to expand his network and make his recommendations come straight from the heart.  It is for good reason he is the proud owner of the golden keys on his collar, the symbol of the international organization Les Clefs’ d’Or, he carries since 2002.
Being a walking encyclopaedia of the city, he knows how to occasionally treat his wife and children on a nice dinner or special event in his Mokum. One thing is for sure; Peter will not leave his hometown for anything else… let’s hope he thinks the same way of the Waldorf Astoria.

This week has shown me so much that I have to be thankful for. #TheStoriesBeginHere - With Matthew, who is following the Elevator Graduate Development Program Europe.
Our globetrotter Matthew visited 5 of the 7 continents in the world and recently made his way to us. After teaching English on the Canary Islands, working for Disney World as a lifeguard in Florida, and at a summer camp in Minnesota as a waiter – you can’t say Matthew just sat around. On the contrary; his passion for travelling and entrepreneurship brought him to all these places.
Originally growing up in his hometown Kendal, he found himself recognizing every tree, lake and hill, which made him realize there is more to discover in the world. The perfect opportunity arose when he applied for the special Elevator Graduate Development Program of Hilton, to become a General Manager. Wouldn’t you love to combine your passion for travel and work? Matthew loves to…. Now he has the privilege to fulfil two placements within the Hilton family  at any given place in Europe, work in multiple departments and peer over the shoulders of our managers.
Once he is done, where do you see him go to become a General Manager? – According to his wanderlust he still has some journeys to finalize towards Southern America and the cold Antarctica. Let’s hope for Matthew the Hilton family will continue its expansion over there.

#TheStoriesBeginHere - With Nick, our Housekeeping Management Trainee “Waldorf Waldorf” was all Nick thought of when picking the location for his final internship at Stenden University Leeuwarden.
Our theatrical Housekeeping management trainee, born and raised in Dalfsen, chose to be behind the scenes at the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam to follow his dream of becoming a Rooms Division Manager one day.

After his first traineeship in the Tower Hotel London at the Front Office department, he now sings his way through the hallways of the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam to check every detail of our public spaces and rooms.
Being able to work in our big housekeeping team and training the room attendants on efficiency and quality is what creates a smile on his face every day.
Our highly motivated and ambitious Nick will stick around with us for another six months to create the best home away from home for our guests. Who knows where we might find him after... The world of beauty is the world of Lisa. After graduating as a Beauty & Spa Therapist, Lisa specialized in make-up and skin artistry, while completing massage master classes. Always dreaming of moving to Amsterdam, Lisa joined our Team 5 months ago and currently works in the Guerlain Spa at the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam. As a Beauty Therapist, Lisa gives massages, facials, make-up artistry and a combination of body and face treatments. She prides herself on giving each and every guest a boost of confidence and focusing on the details to make their experience one of a kind.
During her free time, Lisa loves to follow fashion and styling trends and explore specialized shops and boutiques in Amsterdam. For some sun, she travels to Lagos in the Algarve, her birthplace and home to her family.

The last few months, I’ve been on an insta hiatus, soaking in precious moments with this little girl (who isn’t this little anymore). The time is fleeting, even though some days seemed to drag on.⠀
⠀ ⠀

The past few months have been a transition—one that I very much expected but harder in some ways too. I have been fortunate enough to be busy with work throughout my ‘maternity leave’ and have made ‘me’ time in my studio, creating some beautiful new products that I cannot wait to share.⠀
⠀ ⠀

But lots of difficult times for people throughout the world, both natural and man-made, continually broke my heart. All I knew how to do was to reach out to those I knew personally or virtually to offer my support from afar and hold my loved ones close, especially my three little girls.⠀
⠀ ⠀

Motherhood is an act of infinite optimism. I have to work hard everyday to be resilient myself—to be patient, to find kindness and to be renewed again and again amidst frustration, sleeplessness and feeling so burned out. But it also teaches me about infinite optimism—I see hope in my daughters’ futures, pure love in their eyes—that I know that if I keep looking, I will find good in this world still.

When you talk about someone who is born for the hospitality industry, you directly think about Andres. He was born in Colombia and grew up in The Netherlands, excited to explore all of the intricacies the hospitality industry has to offer.

Ever since graduating Hotelschool Amsterdam, Andres has worked his whole career in luxury hotels. He started at Hotel de Paris in Monte-Carlo as a Food and Beverage Trainee. Once he moved back to the Netherlands, he gained more experience in five-star hotels such as The Dylan and Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam. Eager to continue to broaden his knowledge, Andres joined our team last May. He currently works as Demi Chef de Rang at our two-Michelin starred restaurant Librije’s Zusje.
He is constantly challenging himself in order to be a few steps ahead of our guests, always anticipating their needs and requests. This is what Andres likes most about his job, fulfilling guests’ desires before they even have to ask.
During his free time, you will find Andres racing through the city on his motorcycle, eager to visit as many new restaurants as he can.

Born in Venezuela, raised in Aruba, our Moises brings a true Caribbean vibe to the team. It was on this tropical island where he was introduced to cooking by Chef Urvin Croes who taught him the basics, while in his spare time he loved catching waves. As if this extreme sport was not enough adventure he decided to move across the pond to settle himself in the Netherlands.
Leaving behind one of his biggest passions in the world; surfing, he chose his purpose in life; cooking. Without any previous experience in the “Michelin world”, he started his challenge at the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam in the kitchen as Chef De Partie for Librije’s Zusje Amsterdam. As Chef the Partie he is responsible for the ‘cold’ part of the kitchen and guiding his team members. While he enjoys guiding colleagues, he is an eager pupil himself, fond of challenges and new opportunities, in hopes to climb the ‘kitchen ladder’. Born in Moordrecht, Fryslan and raised by a conductor and an Opera singer, you would think Dineke’s life path would be set in stone. With music as a natural gift to her, Dineke soon discovered she would never be on stage due to her stage fright. Now working in hospitality, she seems to have overcome this fear. Whether it is Front office, Events or Food & beverage she loves to be ‘on stage’ being the face of the company. However, for her internship at the Waldorf Astoria she chose to be behind the scenes, assisting our Human Resource and Finance departments. As long as she may put a smile on people’s faces, whether with guests or colleagues – Dineke is happy.  Her door is always open for support or some sweets, while she enjoys the daily duties of her traineeship. She does not only look after her colleagues, at home she has her biggest love and care Shika, her Japanese Shiba Inu. When she is not taking care of her dog, you may find her in the kitchen preparing the occasional meal for her friends or family.

#TheStoriesBeginHere – With Floris, Sommelier of Librije’s Zusje Amsterdam

It was during Floris’ first part-time job in a local restaurant where he was introduced to the world of wines, which soon led to a burning passion to discover everything there is to know about wines. Starting his study at the Hotel School, he worked for several prestigious restaurants, including Beluga and Chateau Neercanne, where he learned the importance of pairing culinary creations with the right wines. During his private time, Floris’ passion remains while he continues to educate himself on the art of winemaking by exploring the most remote vineyards. He has travelled from California to South Africa, to the Champagne region in France, the Rhine region in Germany, and the Chianti region of Italy to keep himself up to date.
Unsurprisingly, his knowledge of wines is highly appreciated as a Sommelier for Librije’s Zusje Amsterdam, as Floris works closely with our Executive Chef Sidney Schutte to create the perfect wine and dine combination. Moreover, he makes sure that our wine cellar is fully stocked at all times with only the best wines for our beloved guests.
When Floris isn’t consumed by his wines, you can find him on the golf course practicing his handicap.

#TheStoriesBeginHere – With Amber, our Marketing Trainee

Born and raised in Hoek van Holland, a small town in South-Holland, it was at the age of thirteen that Amber knew her future would be in Hospitality. Preparing herself for her study at Hotelschool the Hague, she crossed the pond to study English in New York. A wise decision; as one of her internships brought her to the land of Whiskey; Scotland. No wonder her first official job was as a Bartender when she joined the Hilton the Hague.
Once in the Hilton family, Amber decided to continue her career within the company at Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam as a Marketing Trainee to expand her knowledge. A position that allowed her to be in the back of house and be involved in all departments. She enjoys the diversity, where one day you are overseeing a photoshoot and the other day you are designing new menu’s for the restaurants. Most importantly, Amber makes sure that all brand standards of the hotel are adhered and the quality is maintained.
Unfortunately her traineeship has almost come to an end, making Amber yearn for a new adventure. When the opportunity arises we will see her move abroad, however we hope to find her in Amsterdam enjoying a novel and a glass of wine nearby.
