(Link in bio.) Food is inextricably rooted in culture and tied to the land. In our case (and in most cases), indigenous people's land. Colonialism attacked their food sources and traditions (e.g. during the Plains Indian Wars, buffalo were slaughtered nearly to extinction as a means of cultural genocide). While food was one of the greatest weapons used against indigenous peoples, food is also part of their solution to healing and strengthening their cultural identities. The ongoing food sovereignty work of Sean Sherman, the Oglala Lakota founder of The Sioux Chef, among many others, to revive their ancestral food ways and knowledge is inspiring and critical—definitely for indigenous people, and also for non-natives to recognize and celebrate the incredible food of this land, and their beautiful, diverse and resilient cultures. I hope you will read this piece that I had the honor to write! http://buff.ly/2w2wL4M
