Story behind one of the images in my painting:
The news story for the "Lei of Aloha" came up on my memories today and I felt this incredible act of compassion should be remembered as it made such an impression on me, I was compelled to honor it by including it in my painting.
The 49ft lei was hand woven and brought all the way to Orlando from heartbroken, native Hawaiians that wished to express that, "even though we are 5000 miles away and another huge ocean away, we feel the pain and we feel the shock. We wanted to reach out and give Orlando a hug." The Lei of Aloha was three 50 foot leis that once twisted together were 49 feet in length. Each lei had 49 strands which individually included 49 cowrie shells each with a name of one of the souls that was lost that Sunday. It was thought of the Wednesday after Pulse, started the following Thursday morning and, after having hands working on it each day from 8am-10pm, was completed the next Sunday.
It is meant to represent "joy, love, and healing, and peace, and that's what we are hoping it will do for everyone here." I am still moved and deeply touched by the thought of such a caring people from so far away. Too often it can seem that we are only concerned with what directly affects us, this thoughtful gesture of selfless love continues to be a huge inspiration. .
