It's that time of year! Our seniors will be graduating high school in t-minus 3 months. To honor their hard work and celebrate their bright futures, we'll be featuring a #SeniorSpotlight each week! First up, Anya!

Anya, a senior at @gmahighschool, joined @inndwelling in the 8th grade. She is an honor roll student passionate about service. She has visited Antigua Guatemala twice on service trips and spent a year providing ESL classes to a Congolese refugee family through school. This past Spring Break, Inn Dwelling helped her travel to Puerto Rico, where she supported ongoing disaster relief efforts from Hurricane Maria. Anya has received acceptance to 6 colleges but is still deciding between @gouchercollege and @setonhall (though she's leaning towards Seton Hall!). She plans to double major in International Relations and Diplomacy and Modern Languages, with a focus on Spanish and Arabic, as well as minor in Economics.

For Anya, Inn Dwelling is more than just an after-school program she attends: "Inn Dwelling gave me the opportunity to attend an elite high school that could prepare me for college--an opportunity my family and I would not have had otherwise. The program has been my academic support system. Because of Inn Dwelling, I will never stop challenging myself." #thepowerofeducation #knowledgeispower #breakthecycle #letsdothis #philadelphia #cityofbrotherlylove #inndwelling #inndwellingscholars

Who agrees with Neloson Madela? We couldnt more!
Lets teach our children the importance of Education & its power but also, let teach them about Nelson Madela, an extraordinary human being. #mumsinthwoodeducation

The achievement gap between white students and black students has barely narrowed over the last 50 years, despite nearly a half century of supposed progress in race relations and an increased emphasis on closing such academic discrepancies between groups of students. We may be living at a time when education should be readily available for everyone, but knowledge still appears to be hard to come by. Research from 2013 that was just recently released suggests that black and Latino students are still a few grade levels behind their white classmates. The finding is part of a series from Education Next commemorating the 50th anniversary of "Equality of Education Opportunity," also known as the Coleman Report, a breakthrough report on education equity written by James Coleman.
The report was mandated by the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which tasked the Department of Education with examining the inequality of educational opportunities in elementary and secondary education across the U.S. Its purpose was to identify the differences between schools attended by white students and black students.
The Coleman Report found, that in both math and reading the average black student in grade 12 placed in the 13th percentile of the score distribution, meaning that 87 percent of white students in grade 12 scored ahead of the average black 12th grader. But 50 years later, that gap has barely narrowed. The average 12th grade black student placed only in the 19th percentile. This type of stagnancy is unacceptable and is largely due to poor curriculums in urban schools. #dreamUP is committed to decreasing the achievement gap between black and white students. Traditional teaching methods do not work and need to be replaced with innovative lesson plans that motivate students to achieve. #dreamUP revolutionizing education. When asked how she’s transforming lives through education, Leti said “As a teacher and coach, I work to ensure that all my students and athletes know they are capable of achieving anything they want to. We work on raising their self esteem and holding themselves to higher standards and expectations. We reinforce being a positive role model for all those around them, and always doing their personal best in whatever they do.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It is so beautiful to watch what is happening inside of The Mihret House.
We share this so that you understand just how significant your monthly support is to the lives and futures of these children.

When ‘A’ first came to us he could not read or write. Most children who live on the street do not have opportunity to attend school regularly. It is a lot of responsibility for a child who is on his own to survive and pursue an education. Also, once a child misses a specific number of days, he or she is kicked out of school until the next academic year. Because of this, most of our children have had little education thus far. This was true for ‘A’. Today Yoni shared the exciting news that after only a few months of dedicated academic instruction by our social worker and staff, ‘A’ is now reading AND writing in BOTH Amharic and English! Yoni says he has also come very far in his math skills!! Education is so very important for these boys, as it will be one of the keys that God uses to unlock a good future.
Please know how grateful we are at Mercy Branch for our Street Team, the people who financially give on a monthly basis, and in doing so help us share the mercy of Jesus with once forgotten children. ‘A’ is very excited to show off some of his work to you. “So let us wage a global struggle against illiteracy, poverty, and terrorism, and let us pick up our books and pens. They are our most powerful weapons.”
