Exactly 1 year ago today, I went one-on-one with the Great One.
Backstory - The Rock has been filming for a few months on Oahu for Jumanji and I heard that it was to be his very last day of shooting on island. Determined to meet one of my idols growing up, I did some research and found out where he was filming. I raced to the location as fast as “legally” possible (ok ok, I was hauling ass as if I was in Fast and Furious) and parked outside their film location parking lot in Nuuanu. There was 2 other cars there with the obvious shared goal as me. I got out of my car and chit chat with some of the other people there. It seemed like eternity as the rain started to drizzle. Then a little after 8:30pm; 3 hours later, the Rock personal body guard came out to meet us and let us know he was almost done filming and would be out as soon as he’s done but doesn’t have much time to meet as he’s gotta jet off to his final shooting location right after. He laid out the ground rules - no selfies, no autographs, make sure your camera flash is on as you only get 1 picture, and he (the bodyguard) would have to take the photo.
About 30 mins later, a black suv pulls over to the side and the Rock emerges waving hi to the us. As I waited my turn, I started questioning myself wondering how to address him, should I call him “Dwayne” or “Rock”? Should I mention my favorite wrestling match he was in or movie? Before I knew it, it was my turn. I approached the Rock, squared off and stared him down as if we were headlining Wrestlemania, stuck out my hand and said “How you doing Rock? Huge fan”. His response was very humble as he said “Thanks brotha, let’s take a picture”. After we took this pic, I told him “Mahalo for taking time out of your schedule to meet and take this picture with me. It was cold waiting for 3 hours, but it was well worth it.” He said “No, Thank you for being such a fan and for being patient in waiting for me. I appreciate you man”. We shook hands and I left.
That’s the full story.
