“People say that what we are all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we are really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality. So that we can actually feel the rapture of being alive.” Joseph Campbell
The experience of birth is that most holy of experiences; touching the ache to live in her bloodiest, rawest, most chaotic resonance and miracle.

BIRTH IS A LANGUAGE THAT DEFIES PRACTICALLY ALL LOGIC & SANITY
Birth is crazy. Utterly undefinable. A heave into the holy mad and outrageous rhythm of existence her very self. You try and wrap your mind around it. And there continues to be never-ending awe.

Even when it seems so simple, so straightforward, a more realistic cacophony of chaos orchestrates in the background. Sometimes it hums quietly just underneath the surface. Sometimes it finds a sweet rhythmic pitch. Sometimes it takes your voice away. Sometimes it is crashing ruthlessly right in front of your face. This is the way of such things. But worry not, for it is okay! For birth asks you to make room for all the things; to court all the things. Birth asks to embrace all the paradoxes and contractions. It asks to hold all emotions and radical contrasts all at the same time. It’s hard to make sense. But this is not the work of the prefrontal cortex, your thinking brain. But the work of your wild heart, the beat of your breath, and that intense primal heat you will never truly know until you are in the thickest heaves of labor. .

So stunning @thelanguageofbirth !! “This beauty was made over a services of obsessive days where all I could do was paint and sketch and collage, mad with the force of creation; by the magic in the matrices of the unborn. Governed by the predictable and the random.” #thelanguageofbirth

DO NOT TELL MOMS
heavy and uncomfortable and anxious in the last days of pregnancy
to savor them
because they will miss it when it’s gone.

Memory is always more glamorous and worthwhile when you are on the other side of something. So in the meantime, commiserate. Bitch. Complain. Sympathize. Send weird & funny memes that spark to her sense of humor. Encourage her to treat herself. To do something nice everyday she wakes up pregnant. Because while it sucks she can also do it; pull from the depths of her inner conviction, like a warrioress and keep going.

So True!!

BIRTH IS A LANGUAGE OF ANGER
Anger is a wonderful emotion. It is here to help you honor yourself, respect yourself, and develop healthy, well-defined relationships. Vulnerability. The ability to love. It’s about protection and honorable boundaries. It’s about conviction and healthy detachment. Open communication.
Anger contains a great deal of focused, protective energy. She sets your boundaries by walking the perimeter of your soul and keeping an eye on you, the people around you, and your environment.
When we do not have enough anger, we struggle to set boundaries and protect ourselves in relationships. Without our healthy anger, we can lose our vitality and our capacity to react and respond in resilient ways.
If your boundaries are broken (through the insensitivity of others) anger comes forward to restore your sense of strength and separateness. To renew your sense of self.
If you are angry, ask yourself: “WHAT MUST BE PROTECTED?” and “WHAT MUST BE RESTORED?” This movement of questions will allow you to speak and act from a position of strength, rather than from brutality or passivity, which is where so many people tend to go with their anger. For when you have an awakened connection to your anger and a clear sense of your own boundaries, you’ll be able to honor boundaries and individuality in others; therefore, your relationships won’t be based on power struggles, projections, or enmeshment. Healthy anger helps you engage more effectively because it allows you to relate authentically and respectfully, in the world.

THE LANGUAGE OF BIRTH, Stepha’s Doula Journals

This little rambling man was birthed in the family car! A 2004 Toyota Sienna Van, 4-Wheel Drive.
Mama texted me around 6:30 in the morning, “I’m going to have a baby today” she sent. No matter how many times I read such things it always brings a very particular and unique merriment to my heart; that divine extraordinary knowing of woman. A knowing of how her entire life was going to radically change, that exact day! Contractions picked up quickly and by 9:45 AM she was arranging plans to get to the birth centre. I told her I would meet her there as I live 5 blocks away. At 10:04 AM she called me again. Her primal scream thick and overcome with panic crackled over the speaker. “Breathe in through your nose J, and out your mouth! In through your nose, out your mouth.” I soothed her. “That’s the way. You have your breath. You always have your breath.” I guided her through a few more contractions as I felt the intensity greatly build. I told her husband I needed to get off the phone so I could meet them at the birth centre. As I hung up I felt one of my housemates curiously peeking her head into my room. “I think this baby is going to be born in the car!” I exclaimed, more to the universe and to the spirits of birth than to my housemate. I packed up and flew down the street. I arrived at 10:35 AM.
Their van was chaotically parked almost up the walking ramp—echoing with a particular flare of Hollywood humor. Blood pooled on the concrete. I entered the birth center to contagious laughter. Babe had been born in the car! At 10:21 AM, a few minutes after I got off the phone with her, Mama had felt something in her pants and upon pulling off her pajamas found a baby head! His shoulders quickly followed. Papa had told her, “pick up our son babe!” and as they turned the corner from James to Alabama, their little son was birthed out in sea of waters and vernix. What ecstasy! They are an entire family of J names and were waiting to meet this little bean before giving him his J name, to see if it fit. And guess what their top pick was? James! So Baby James, borned out on James street, is now here! What a wild ride.

I often get asked about my logo, so I thought I would share the inspiration behind it.
I was originally inspired by the amazing drawings by @thelanguageofbirth These images really spoke to me and what I was trying to portray in my business. The image of the babies still in the womb surrounded by flourishing colourful flowers, really showing the beauty of pregnancy and birth.
I wanted to incoorporate the Hamsa hand or the Lotus as I have always been drawn to these images and love the meaning behind them.
It was the incredibly talented Sacred Wilde https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/SacredWilde?ref=shop_sugg that put my image board together and we ended up with my logo :) Combining the lotus with the Hamsa hand and a simple image of the baby still growing in the womb.

Im looking forward to a busy week ahead, supporting and nourishing the wisdom of mothers, babies and partners with massage and bodywork.

Visualisations. How powerful they can be. They have such a huge role in sports psychology, athletes training and imagining what winning will feel like. The smell. The time. The audience. Clearly this is not the whole picture...I’m not gonna be visualising my way to the Olympics any time soon! 🏃🏼‍♀️🙃
*
Sports psychologists say athletes can create new neural pathways by visualising the result they want. I’m not say, by any means, that if you imagine your dream birth you will get it, but it is one part of a puzzle that will help implant positive messages in your mind.

So my child apparently has a big head 😂⠀

The other weekend when we hiked up Mt Coolum, we grabbed Attie’s hat out and it would not fit on his head, so we had to wrap a shirt around the carrier to try and give him some sun protection. After getting down, we thought we should be responsible parents and get him a new hat straight away, next minute we are at the shop and he has a 12-24mth hat on his head 🙄⠀

It made me laugh because it took me back to sitting in my midwifes room, talking about if anyone in my family had any genetic condition that I knew of. I said not that I knew of but I text mum to check, next minute I got a txt back from her and my aunty stating that the only thing I had to be concerned about was that all the babies on that side of the family were born with big heads 🙄 Great mum...hahaha just what a women who has never birthed a baby before wants to hear. Lucky Sonya was there to affirm that our bodies are capable of birthing all kinds of shaped babies, this was certainly true.⠀

PS How good is Attie smiling and feeding at the same time in this photo, he looks like he is drinking magic ✨⠀

💗💗💗💗💗💗💗RECLAIMING THE POWER OF THE PELVIS
The pelvis is a source of tremendous power, physically as well as emotionally. The Eastern Vedic traditions speak extensively about the root chakra and how important it is to the healthy functioning of everything else in the body. Chinese medicine also honors the pelvis as a major gateway to the body’s vital energy flow. The importance of this area for the health of the entire human system is tremendous.
If the pelvis has been injured, compressed or compartmentalized, whether due to trauma or cultural/religious issues, it can have a significant negative effect on long- and short-term health, as well as diminish the life energy available for creative endeavors.
Some people are embodied in their pelvic region, but in a disjointed, compartmentalized manner causing confusion and disorder.
At the bottom of it all, a return to the embodied wisdom of the pelvis is what naturally fuels creative inspirations, igniting them and you in a good way.
Our sexuality and sensuality as human beings are fueled by this energy as well, and that core energy of who we are is a vital part of living life fully and joyfully.
When we reclaim the energy and wisdom of our pelvis and integrate it with the rest of our body, there’s often a marvelous resurgence of life force, bringing a return of desire. Ecstatic experiences can be the outcome of igniting the fire in the pelvis and reuniting it with the legs and feet, gut, heart, voice and head.
Reclaiming our inner sensations that reside primarily in the pelvis, and linking them to everything else, allows us to feel the deliciousness of being alive. So what gets in the way of reclaiming the pelvis? Often, it’s cultural and religious taboos and trauma.

Reclaiming Your Body: Healing from Trauma and Awakening to Your Body’s Wisdom by Suzanne Scurlock-Durana

The most beautiful and striking artwork of @priii_barbosa who I am so happy came across my feed. Her work stirs my soul from my heart to pelvic bowl. Berco translates to birthplace.
