Elvis was very much in the news this week. He received the metal of freedom. I know a lot of people are mad that NONE of his family represented him or at least acknowledge him. He was the only one with no family:( there’s a lot of ‘drama’ because of who’s the President right now. I don’t like Trump. But his family let him down. Politics divide people, but arts unite people. Elvis united people.
There’s a lot of myths, rumours and misunderstanding surrounding the legend that is Elvis. With his breakthrough and huge success, it opened a whole new door for that type of music. That amount of fame was never seen before. Even artists before Elvis could now enjoy success too. Without Elvis they would had stayed in the dark. Elvis’s music was loved by everyone. He united all races with music. He’s one of the greatest entertainer of all time, and sold more than a billion records.
He had to go through a lot. He didn’t had it “easy”. He was on his own. People who judge him know nothing about him in the first place. I read some comments about ‘racist’. Some people want to use him as a divider when he in fact united America. He himself said he didn’t create rock and roll. He always gave credits where it was due. He had his own interpretation of the music he'd grown up on. He grow up with them. They wouldn't let black music through. He opened the door for black music and performers to be accepted into mainstream. All the others “greats” that came after were influenced by Elvis. He helped open the door and changed popular culture forever. He started a revolution.
He wanted the If I Can Dream song as a vision of his values and as a tribute to Martin Luther King. He was good friend with Sammy Davis Jr, BB King, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Muhammad Ali, etc. Even James Brown said he was his brother and went to his funeral.
Remember when Elvis started touring with The Sweet Inspirations, there’s was a venue where Elvis was told to leave the black girls home. Elvis refused and said that if they didn’t come, neither was he.
