Squats are a great compound exercise. They target the main muscle groups of the lower body; hamstrings, quads, and gluteus.

Squats provide an added bonus as they engage the joints in movement. The hips, knees and ankles use flexion and extension as a launchpad for powering the muscle groups. -
So how deep should the squat be and does the depth determine the effectiveness of the squat?

Flexing 90 degrees or more makes for a great squat but more than 90 degrees makes for a deep squat and this will put additional pressure on the knees and ankles. The added pressure on the knees and ankles can be risky for athletes with a history of injury and so should be undertaken with caution. Again, let your body be your guide.

It's clear that an extended range of motion allows for greater potential in strength, power and movement. But this should always be balanced with the risk of injury. The right balance will be different for each athlete and should be considered in terms of the individual physical history and assessment.
