A few months ago, we put all our crazy schedules together to find a shared free weekend. The objective was simple: climb South Sister and spend some quality time in the woods.
Hospital shifts, moving days, and smoky skies tried to derail our plans, but like all good things, in the end everything came together.
On Saturday afternoon, we hiked a leisurely 4.5 miles into Green Lakes. On Sunday, we played cards, napped, and lounged by the lake. On Monday, we awoke early to climb 4,000 feet in four miles to the summit of South Sister, where we ate oatmeal and marveled at the thousands of butterflies, expansive views, and glacial pools. We headed down, packed up camp, and quite literally jogged back to the car. It made for a 15-mile day, but we had dreams of burgers and milkshakes.
Today my skin is sunburned and my feet are raw, but my heart is grateful: for wide open spaces, mountainous places, and friends who push you to be better, stronger, & faster. Here’s to the perfect blend of Type I and II fun with two of my bests. 👏🏼
