June reads. Mixed feelings all around. Very mixed - turbulent, even - feelings about The Folding Star. I doubt I'll seek more by Hollinghurst or Vonnegut, but I really enjoy Palahniuk's writing.

I haven’t seen much about Alan Hollinghurst on #bookstagram, which is surprising because his writing is like liquid chocolate: sublime, decadent, and always leaves you wanting more. In my opinion he is one of the most talented writers around today; his prose is just a sheer pleasure to read. Last week I finished ‘The Folding Star’, Hollinghurst’s second novel (1994) and the third of his that I have read after ‘The Stranger’s Child’ and the pure masterpiece that is ‘The Line of Beauty’.
.
This book explores themes of love, loneliness and longing through the story of a gay British man in his thirties, living in Belgium as an English tutor in the early 1990s. Edward Manners falls helplessly in love with a 17-year-old Belgian boy he is tutoring, and so begins a Lolita-like obsession that is both compelling and creepy in equal measure. But this book is so much more than a tale of sexual obsession: Manners is also researching the work of a Flemish painter, himself infatuated with his muse, and is dealing with great personal grief - his poignantly and beautifully described childhood forms the backbone of the novel.
.
In short, it’s like Lolita meets A.S. Byatt’s ‘Possession’ and a bit of Ian McEwan’s ‘Atonement’, with E.M. Forster always watching over like the singing moon in 'Moulin Rouge …If you can't imagine what such a mix may produce (!?), basically it’s a great book that really pulls you under and demands that you give it 100% attention and love. Naturally, because it’s a story about obsession.
.
Hollinghurst’s use of language is the star of the show: he elevates the mundane to the divine in such a way that leaves you silently applauding his choice of words in almost every sentence. It’s just exquisite. The fifth star is lacking from my review only because I wasn’t really invested in Edward’s plight, plus there was maybe a little too much of the novel dedicated to waiting around in bars picking up men. When you get to the really good stuff around the middle, you can’t help but think he could have got there sooner. But then again, maybe that’s just necessary context. This book will certainly not be everyone's cup of tea!

Have you read any Hollinghurst?

A coworker was curious about what I was reading. She read the front and back covers of the book opened in my hands. Later I discovered, in one quotation, the novel was genred as erotic fiction. #gaynoless #alanhollinghurst #thefoldingstar
