Sir Jackie Stewart is one of Britain’s all time great sporting personalities, winning three Formula 1 World Championships, and 27 Grand Prix, ranking him as one of the ten greatest racing drivers of all time.
From 1964-73, the “Flying Scot,” in his trademark tartan helmet, established a race-win record that remained unbroken in F1 for fourteen years. He was also an accomplished marksman, winning British, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, and English trap shooting championships between 1959-62. Cars and racing were his true passions though, and after failing to make the 1960 British Olympic shooting team, his focus shifted to racing exclusively. A near-death accident in the 1966 Belgium Grand Prix led Stewart to becoming the sports leading safety campaigner. The following year, his BRM H16 was the first F1 car to have full seat belts, and in 1968, he and fellow driver Dan Gurney then became the first F1 drivers to wear full-face safety helmets. -@handmedowns
