I've heard great things about this place, but unfortunately we did not have a great experience here. When we were being seated, the host asked us "how's your day so far?" and I told him that we were planning to go to the beach but it was cloudy and the host interrupted me before I could finish talking, starting off by saying "I don't know where you're from, but here in Vancouver..." and then proceeded to educate me about my own city, which frustrated me because I've lived here my whole life. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, though, since this restaurant is in a tourist destination (Gastown), but that is not an excuse to assume where I am from and I doubt this would have happened if my friends and I were white, also, he interrupted me while I was talking, which was impolite, to be frank.
Later, after ordering, we waited for about 30 minutes before our waitress finally came up to us to tell us that the food would be delayed. I usually don't mind waiting for food but the restaurant was not even busy since we came after the lunch rush, and the main thing that bothered me was the lack of communication. Interestingly enough, we actually saw our food ready on the counter outside of the kitchen when she came up to us to tell us that our food would be delayed. I understand that the lunch rush just passed, and our waitress was probably tired, but that isn't an excuse to be complacent and take it easy on the job.
The most disappointing part of this experience was that when our food finally came, the bread for my pulled pork sandwich was really soggy, probably due to the fact that it had been sitting on the counter for an extra 15 minutes. I could have complained about it but I didn't want to wait another 45 minutes to get a new sandwich.
To top it all off, after we finished paying for our food, the waitress asked, "are you guys from here?". I usually overlook the quality of service at a restaurant if the food is good, but for the racism and overpriced soggy sandwich that I received, I was extremely disappointed. I had a very uncomfortable experience at The Flying Pig and I will not be coming back here anymore.
