Today @tmvff we saw @thedevilweknow about DuPont knowingly dumping the chemical C8 in Parkersburg WV. C8 is found in Teflon and water repellent finishes. It is also referred to as PFC, PFOA, PFOS, perfluorinated compounds, perfluorocarbon. It is one of the first chemicals we banned in the finish of our rain jackets. The film hit close to home because the dumping occurred upriver from our hometown, Cincinnati OH. It took 7 years to conduct the largest chemical study and prove C8 is linked to 6 diseases and cancers. Now, corporations that used to produce C8 are switching to C6, which has a similar biological impact to C8, but not the same empirical evidence...yet. How long until we find out these are also toxic substances? How many people have to get sick? C8 is found in the bloodstream of 99% of humans today, and even polar bears 😢
One of the victims of the WV contamination is a man who was born with facial deformities and endured extensive surgery during his childhood. The C8 in his blood is still so high and the chemical is so persistent, he has a 50% chance of having a baby with deformities. He was present for a Q&A after the show and WOW- we are reminded WHY we started this business. After a year and a half of R&D into sustainable materials, dyeing & finishing chemicals and ethical production, the chemical component of the process has been the most INTENSE. We dove into basic chemistry, studied surfactants, emulsifiers, hydrophobicity, industrial processing, and learned the ins and outs of the chemical supply industry. We faced dead ends, concealed truth, and hard-headed people resistant to questions and innovation. We don’t have all the answers, but let me tell you, after seeing this powerful film, we are NOT GIVING UP.
How can we protect ourselves? Ask questions and refuse to buy PFC-coated apparel. It is difficult to know if a garment contains PFC (more labeling and EPA regulations are needed!) but look for the GOTS and Bluesign certification labels- they are private organizations that ban these chemicals as well as others like formaldehyde and heavy metals.
Would love to hear your thoughts on this issue!
