Next on our list is THE DARK TOWER (2017), a continuation of the novel series of the same name by Stephen King co-written and directed by Nikolaj Arcel (A ROYAL AFFAIR, KING'S GAME) starring Idris Elba (PACIFIC RIM, BEASTS OF NO NATION), Matthew McConaughey (INTERSTELLAR, TRUE DETECTIVE), Dennis Haysbert (FIST FIGHT, 24), Jackie Earle Haley (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, WATCHMEN), Katheryn Winnick (VIKINGS, AMUSEMENT), Abbey Lee (THE NEON DEMON, MAD MAX: FURY ROAD), Fran Kranz (BLOODSUCKING BASTARDS, THE CABIN IN THE WOODS), Claudia Kim (AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, MARCO POLO) and Tom Taylor (DOCTOR FOSTER). The story follows the last of the order of gunslingers (Elba) from another dimension and a young boy (Taylor) from our world on a quest to protect a mythical structure located at the center of the Universe called the Dark Tower—which supports all realities—from a ruthless, immortal sorcerer (McConaughey) seeking to destroy the Tower, allowing beings from the darkness outside to invade and destroy reality.
This film faced controversy early on by casting Elba as Roland Daschain, who was White in the books and is compared to Marshal Dillon from Gunsmoke and John F. Kennedy. The change of race was worked very well and simply into the narrative and it gave a chance to see a strong, multilayered Black protagonist. Although, technically, he is a co-protagonist here, it's still refreshing. As an adaptation/continuatuon, the film does fall short in a lot of places, primarily in underutilizing its cast. But as a standalone dark fantasy film, it's actually pretty good.....#TheDarkTower #StephenKing #NikolajArcel #IdrisElba #MatthewMcConaughey #DennisHaysbert #JackieEarleHaley #KatherynWinnick #AbbeyLee #FranKranz #ClaudiaKim #TomTaylor #RolandDeschain #TheGunslinger #28DaysOfBlackGenreCinema #BlackGenreCinema #BlackCinema #BlackHistoryMonth #AfricanAmericanHistoryMonth #BlackAchievementMonth #TheGeekMansion
