Always looking up — or at least, trying to. My height and other such factors can make it a tad tricky at times.
When you’re working on a dream, (oh, Springsteen, how you know) it can be so frustrating not to see things take off in the way you want them to. The world tells you to try your hardest but not to try too hard. That balance is something I think I’ll always be working on — right up until I run my last step. Always re-calibrating, measuring, adding up, subtracting, tweaking the recipe, the formula, the edit. But when it seems as if it’s not working, I like to think back to the speech Bruce Springsteen gave at the first SXSW I ever attended, back in 2012. His words stuck with me then and pull them out whenever I am in need of reminding. Which is, basically, on the regular. "Don’t take yourself too seriously, and take yourself as seriously as death itself.
Don’t worry. Worry your ass off.
Have ironclad confidence, but doubt – it keeps you awake and alert. Believe you are the baddest ass in town, and, you suck!” [Imagine these words said in his trademark gravelly, blue-collar voice.] As the Boss himself knows, this will keep you honest and hungry, and yes, harden you. All necessary ingredients for the road ahead.
