Shoutout to Beacon DC and our wonderful Founder, Shreya, for the support you’ve provided to District Mugs! Thanks @thebeacondc for the grantee spotlight! ・・・
👉🏾Voting for this year’s Beacon grant is still open until this Saturday! Vote at the link in bio. ・・・
#repost Our last grantee spotlight of the 2017-2018 cycle is District Mugs! District Mugs is a
volunteer group that introduces entrepreneurship and business concepts to homeless men and women by teaching them how to design, market, and sell coffee mugs. Participants engage in weekly teaching and designing workshops and earn a small income from pop-up retail locations positioned across the city - such as @West Elm, @Pottery Barn, @Mellow Mushroom and the George Washington University Annual Art Fair.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
In the first six weeks of programming, participants split time between learning basic business concepts and designing mugs. After six weeks, participants graduate from the business course and participate in pop-sales of their products. --------------------------------------------------------------------
According to District Mugs Founder, Shreya Bhargava, the BEACON Grant has helped the young nonprofit gain credibility, sell over 1,800 coffee mugs since September 2017 (with multiple bulk orders), make improvements to their website and increase their volunteer base -- with three new members who found District Mugs through the BEACON Directory. ----------------------------------------------------
We could not be more proud of the continued impact that District Mugs makes on DC's entrepreneurial ecosystem. We're thrilled to see the progress that will continue to flow from future grantees...and we encourage you to submit our BEACON Grant Application today! #ladyboss #beacongrant2k18 #thebeacondc

For the culture✨via #funhousedc @shann_i_yam.
Zora Neale Hurston wrote in her 1928 book, “I feel most colored when I’m thrown against a sharp white background.”
That background is often the institutions belonging to our communities—museums, libraries, galleries and archives. We’re trying to shift the narrative.
Vote for us @thebeacondc to help us create programming to uplift women of color artists and culture workers in the local DC-Baltimore arts ecosystems! http://bit.ly/beacongrantvote #BGMBfindyourspace #BGMBcoLAB #brownartink #202creates #acreativedc #repost #friyay #thebeacondc

@brwngirlsmuseblog has been a 3 year project of mine and @domesticanx. And the journey has been amazing. We recently launched a new project called @brownartink, an arts+community incubator in the DC/Baltimore area to foster collaboration and dialogue among local artists, cultural institutions, and culture workers. Excited to announce we made it to the second round of the @thebeacondc grant program, for community voting!
✨Vote for us @thebeacondc (http://bit.ly/beacongrantvote), an org to uplift women-founders, to help us get women of color artists paid, and to support the local arts ecosystem. We’ve been doing this journey for so long out of pocket, pulling together our own resources to make things happen. With funding we can do so much more! Spread the word🙏🏾 #BGMBcoLAB #BGMBfindyourspace #thebeacondc #acreativedc #202creates

Friends and family -

My idea to create a diversity motivated accelerator for entrepreneurial women of DC has advanced to the community voting round via @thebeacondc - Please help me make an impact by voting!!! It's super easy to vote and takes at least 2 minutes:

1. Visit THE LINK IN BIO to register and access the voting platform. You will be prompted to confirm your email after submitting. Once confirmed, you may log-in and cast your vote.

2. You can find my application in one of two ways:
a. Under the category "Providing Resources and Support for Women Entrepreneurs," you will find Papilia's logo + project description.

b. By searching for "Papilia" by organization name under the search list function located on the top right hand side of your screen.

3. Each registrant has four votes and can cast one vote per category and one vote per application. The votes to do not reset.

This idea is so vital for our economy and for women who do not have access to resources to help them start a business.

Please share with your friends, and if you have questions, please ask away. Thank you so so much!
You can find the full details of my project before you vote.

Had to pull out this throwback from our launch party (3 years ago🎉) on a Tuesday for a special announcement!
🚨 We made it to the 2nd round of @thebeacondc grant program! ✨VOTE for us TODAY (search “Brown Art Ink”): http://bit.ly/beacongrantvote. (Open until August 25th) Tell a friend 🗣
@brownartink is a community-building project and incubator created by us, to increase the arts ecosystem for women artists, culture workers, and communities of color based in the greater Washington, DC-Baltimore area. Congrats to Liz Sara, @thebeacondc Advisory Board Member, for her appointment as Chairperson of the National Women's Business Council @nwbcgov. As an entrepreneur with 30 years of expertise, Ms. Sara will undoubtedly serve as a champion and asset for entrepreneurial ecosystem builders nationwide throughout her three-year term. ————————————————————
Prior to her induction as NWBC Chairperson, Ms. Sara received her Bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York and her Master’s degree from the University of Maryland. She then went on to found Best Marketing, LLC which provides early stage software companies with PR and business development services. She was also instrumental in co-founding SpaceWorks, an eCommerce software company that she helped grow from a small startup to $25 million in revenue. Ms. Sara was also involved in the early beginnings of AOL and America Online, where she designed the PR program and investor roadshow, as well as helped launch a new division within Lexis/Nexus. ———————————————————————
Aside from working as a successful entrepreneur, Ms. Sara also sits on the board of the Dingman Center of Entrepreneurship at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business and was the first female Chairperson to do so. She is also an Adjunct Professor of Marketing at the Smith School of Business. ———————————————————————
In her own words, “[by] leveraging my network, experience and hands-on work with entrepreneurs, I am confident we can all make a positive impact on helping women founders successfully navigate the challenges of starting and growing their business," Ms. Sara said. " I’m honored to be selected for this role."

To meet the needs of women business owners in DC, Hera Hub, InnovatorsBox®, and 12PointFive offered customized, high-quality resources to entreprenuers who were pressed for time. After surveying women business owners, the all-women team developed the Mentorship Roadshow, a short-term mentorship engagement that plugged 11 mentors into 24 businesses for 20-30 min segments.
___________________________________________________

The Roadshow provided high-quality, efficient, and customized support for women business owners in DC, as well as insights and roadmaps for success. By partnering with organizations in different locations and securing additional mentors, The Roadshow hopes to further expand the peer networks of mentees and reach even more entrepreneurs in the region. According to one attendee, "The Mentorship Roadshow is in the top five of networking events I have ever attended -- and I attend a TON!" ______________________________________________________________

Thanks, Mentorship Roadshow for producing a phenomenal engagement for DC's women founders! #thebeacondc #ladyboss #beacongrantprogram

This week, we're showcasing select winners of last year's BEACON Grant Awards! Stay tuned for how they used funds to support innovative opportunities for women entrepreneurs. First up: Kezia Williams of the @theblackupstart ." Kezia used BEACON funds to support the pilot of the Black Womenpreneurs School (BWS). Through a six-day workshop, 11 women founders were led through ideation and business formation curriculum and completed a minimum viable product at the program's conclusion. BWS hired local founders as instructors, helped participants raise $2,200 through an optional bootstrapping training, and used instructor experience/platforms to connect participants to further funding opportunities and distribution platforms. Thanks for our amazing and impactful work, Kezia! #thebeacondc #ladyboss #ecosystembuilders #dcbusiness #entrepreneur
