Our school was filled with vibrancy and energy last weekend when we played host to the @share_ista Jakarta High School Festival. The three-day event gathered students from over 60 high schools in Jakarta and from abroad, including the American International School Dhaka, Australian International School in Singapore, British School Jakarta and St. Andrew’s International School in Bangkok. ---
They participated in daily theater and dance workshops led by Indonesian and international artists to learn various styles of performing arts — including some from the Indonesian culture, such as the Balinese Mask Dance, Ratoh Djaroe and Saman Dance.
This year’s theme, “Over the Wall,” encouraged students to climb over the boundaries we set for ourselves, including physical ones, to explore what life is like on the other side for millions of Jakartans. They discovered that theater can help reveal the complex truths of society and that there is hope for those living on the other side of the proverbial “wall.”
When they were not in the theater practicing their craft, the participants visited some of JIS’ service learning sites, such as a home for refugees, a local orphanage and a community for scavengers.
