With Spider-Man: Homecoming already on it's way in theaters this week, today marks the 5th anniversary of The Amazing Spider-Man, Sony's first reboot of their Spider-Man franchise. Following original series director Sam Raimi's departure from what could have been Spider-Man 4 (which was set for a May 2011 release), Sony cancelled the project and decided to reboot their series with a new cast (Andrew Garfield and rising star Emma Stone) and director in Marc Webb (hot off the success of the romcom 500 Days of Summer) and a darker and grittier tone...and to keep the film rights from expiring and returning to Marvel. When you look at this planned new series was built on a excuse. This supposed "untold story" of Peter Parker is basically another retelling of his origins (getting bit by a genetically altered arachnid, Uncle Ben's death, the "great power comes great responsibility motive, etc.) except it now explores the mystery of his parents disappearance and death, which leads Parker to Oscorp which he meets family friend Curt Connors, whose cross species experiment causes him to transform into the Lizard, gets bit and encounters his intern crush Gwen Stacy, whose father George, a police Captain, swears to capture Peter as he begins to moonlight as a superhero. Contrived coincidences huh? The pros lies in Garfield and Stone's winning chemistry, which is an upgrade from the sappy, cry-fest of MacGuire and Dunst's romance; it made Spidey more of the jokester all wanted to see; and it has the best Stan Lee cameo, but the film as a whole is unfulfiling. It's arc are never explored, rehashes what we've seen before and bares a messy plot structure. It managed to fare well to spawn an even messier sequel that underperformed and cancelled Sony's I'll concieved plans for spin-offs and led to their sharing of the rights with Marvel to reboot him again and include him in the MCU for the best.
