Just like his peers, Joshua Griffin had little to no idea what to expect of the the upcoming 22-weeks that somehow, someway had landed them at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Harford County Maryland. All the youngsters were sure of is: Things have got to change and it has to start with me. "I came to freestate because I was living in and out of my dad's house after I dropped out of high school... Doing whatever I wanted..." says Griffin.
For most candidates/cadets, Freestate is a culture shock and not a subtle one by any stretch of the imagination. Griffin recalls, "adapting to the lifestyle at freestate was tough but I embraced it because change is good."
Currently stationed in Fort Bliss, Texas, Griffin is a Signal Support Systems Specialist (25U) and has loved the entire process. In a recent conversation between his dad and his counselor, Mr. Griffin stated, "Before Freestate, I remember that Josh was complacent, unstructured, disobedient, he refused authority of any kind, he was verbally combative, lazy, vain and disrespectful at times." Now, Mr. Griffin rejoices and says, "He now reflects the embodiment of the exact opposite of those words: he is respectful, is a man of valor, structure, dignity and maturity. He Loves God and his family and is serving his country... Thanks to you guys, Josh already knew how to march. I can't believe 14 months ago he walked across the stage at Freestate... now he will again do it again for the Army. I hope that maybe Joshua could be used as an inspiration for others." When he and I had a conversation about his decision to serve, he said, "I decided to join the service not only because the real military interested me but because Freestate gave me that opportunity by allowing me to take the ASVAB and by equipping me with every tool I needed to become successful here and in life."
