Fun Facts Fridays! Have you ever seen a black squirrel in NYC? Just like this squirrel at TNC, they are a melanistic subgroup of the eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis). Melanism occurs when the animal is born with dark colored pigmentation in the skin. It is the opposite of albinism. Black panthers (panthera onca) were once thought of as a different species, but scientists discovered they are just melanistic. They use this as an advantage to night hunting. #tenaflynaturecenter #tenafly #nj #funfactsfridays #summer #melanism #animals #nativenj #blacksquirrel

We have or new summer storywalk up on the white trail! As you hike, a different page from the story will be on the trees. Great for young hikers to look for the pictures and follow along. Scoot is a beautiful story about the different animals who live at the pond-especially the turtles! #tenaflynaturecenter #tenafly #nj #storywalktrail #reading #summer #outdoors #hiking #explore #discover #family #fun #animals

The male emperor penguin will sit on the eggs to incubate for over two months waiting for the female to return with food. He will then feed the babies when they hatch even though he hasn’t eaten for months! I’m sure many Dad’s out there can relate to putting your children’s needs first. Happy Father’s Day to all the hardworking, loving fathers out there. We hope you have a wonderful day. Enjoy this weather! #tenaflynaturecenter #tnc #tenafly #nj #animals #fathersday #family

Fun Facts Fridays! What is a rainbow? Rainbows are a natural phenomenon caused by the refraction and reflection of light in droplets of water, like after rain, resulting in the appearance of a spectrum of light in the sky. They appear in an arc form. When caused by water and sun, rainbows appear on the side of the sky that is directly opposite the sun. No pot of gold have yet to be found at the end of TNC rainbows but we welcome all members of the community to explore the natural world and see what magic you can find! #funfactsfridays #rainbows #tenaflynaturecenter #tenafly #nj #outdoors #nature #welcomeall #community #nonprofit #explore #rain #wonders

Fun Facts Friday! Poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) is a native plant growing in abundance at the edge of woodland areas where the tree lines break and allows sunshine to filter through. The urushiol is a clear liquid in the plant’s sap which causes skin irritation and can last for one-two weeks depending on the level of allergies. It is however, a delicious treat for many mammals such as deer and goats! There are many sayings to remember not to touch poison ivy such as “leaves of three, leave them be” “hairy rope, don’t be a dope” and “berries of white, stay out of sight” #tenaflynaturecenter #funfactsfridays #tenafly #nj #nativenj #plants #safetyfirst #outdoors #spring #explore #discover

This balloon was found on TNC trails. As you can see, it appears the balloon came from Mother’s Day. Balloons are extremely dangerous to the ecosystem. The second picture is already showing how balloons become transparent and end up looking like jellyfish to many sea creatures. The ocean is where most balloons will end up eventually and become food for many animals. Please think twice before using balloons for special events, especially if you will be outside. And please, do not do “balloon releases” there are many eco-friendly alternatives out there #tenaflynaturecenter #tenafly #nj #saynotoballoons #pollution #harmful #outdoors

Ticks! They are among us! If you can see closely the tick’s front two legs are stretched out waiting to grab the camerawoman! Ticks can not fly or jump, they reach out their legs to grab a host walking by. They can live in any area with grass, even in your own backyard. They can transmit disease so it is important to do a “tick check” after outside play. Check the body for the tiny arachnid about the size of a freckle. If one is attached, remove with tweezers as close to the head as possible and pull upward. Place the tick in a small ziplock bag to bring to your doctor to test it for disease. For more information please check the Centers for Disease Control webpage. #tenaflynaturecenter #tenafly #arachnid #tick #safetyfirst #health #nativenj #outdoors #nj

Fun Facts Fridays! A face only a mother could love. Bats have begun returning to their roosts. If you find that bats are roosting in parts of your home, please be advised that bats are protected by law in New Jersey, and there are proper methods to follow if you wish to exclude bats from a building. Bat exclusion cannot be done during the months of May, June, or July, when maternity colonies are present and young pups could become trapped inside the building. #funfactsfridays #tenaflynaturecenter #tenafly #nj #bats #nj #wild #nativenj #outdoors
