Did you know... to make an earl grey tea, it has to be flavoured with the oil of bergamot. So you can even have an earl grey green or oolong tea! Bergamot oil is made from the rind of a bergamot orange fruit. One hundred bergamot oranges will produce 85 grams of bergamot oil. It's believed that Jacksons of Picadilly first introduced oil of bergamot to tea leaves in the 1800's. However, in 1837, a company called Brocksop & Co had criminal charges made against them because it was found they supplied tea "artificially scented, and, drugged with bergamot in this country".
