Good morning! I've talked about my run group before and I want to share a little more about us. Indy Runners is arguably the largest run club in Indianapolis with a ball park of 200ish runners of all skill levels. We have folks that are walkers and we have Olympic candidates so it's a pretty big range of talent. We have club runs every day but I usually only make it to the Saturday for my long run. When I first joined, I didn't know anyone and I was still learning about running long distances. I've been able to pick up a lot of valuable information from my fellow club runners​ and I have met some really cool people along the way. It's so cool to hear everyone's story and to see them overcome challenges to reach their goals. Whether it's running your first 5k, improving your PR, or going ultra I've witnessed some amazing accomplishments. There are also a lot of local running speciality stores that support all of us crazy runners with water stops and seminars. In fact, the running community is so strong here that Indianapolis received the National Runner Friendly City of the Year Award this year by the Road Runners Club of America. This group pushes me and wants me to succeed but also have some fun along the way. Do you belong to a run group?

When was the last time you burned down one mile as hard as you could? Not a 5k, not 13.1, not 26.2 or even 100? One mile, all out, full bore. To me, this is a very fun but intimidating race. I can have a bad mile in a longer race but there is no hiding in this race. The Monumental Mile is part of the Beyond Monumental series of races here in Indy. The race takes place on Meridian Street which is argueably one of the busiest roads in Indy, maybe the state. It's a straight shot down the street where we finish at the Soliders and Sailors Monument on the circle. I went out real quick and once I hit the half mile marker, I was looking for the 3/4 marker and it seemed so far away! I finished strong and am happy with my time. The goal was to go sub 6:00 and I achieved that. So! If you really want to challenge yourself run just one mile with everything you got. It's a cool feeling!

Noodle on that one......

It's weird to think about but one year ago today, I went out for a run and ended up on the hood of a car. That incident taught me several lessons:

1. Distracted driving is real.
2. You can never have enough visibility gear.
3. Be proactive with traffic.
4. While I don't like running with a phone, safety comes first.
5. ALWAYS call the police and get to the doctor immediately.
6. Be grateful and appreciate the importance in your life - you never know what will happen next.

While November is National Running Safety Month, it really should be an everyday thing. Bright clothing, reflective strips, and lights help but a good head on your shoulders will help more. I catch plenty of crazy looks when I'm in full visibility gear but if it keeps me safe then it's doing its job.
Running is my release, my time to be free. It’s a time when I can listen to some music or reflect on the day. It’s my time to think or completely blank out. And it’s my time to run my fastest mile, my longest distance, or to simply enjoy the weather. It's Medal Monday and I wanted to share this weekend's bling. The first one in the left is the finisher medal for the race and the one in the right is a medal for completing the Indython series. The Indython series consists of two races - the Indy Half Marathon and the Monumental Marathon. Run both and you get the second medal along with a tag that specifies the total race distances. In this case, I had a total of 39.3 race miles in the series so I got the ultra tag (top tier). Coolio

Monumental is OVER. What.....a......race!!!!! I felt good the entire time and tried to wear a smile throughout the whole race. I wasn't really concerned with my time since this was more of a victory lap. No leg issues, no glute issues, no issues at all. I am very blessed that my amazing girlfriend was all over the race course with signs and encouragement while I had friends and family at some key points in the later miles where I need the good vibes to kick in. Thank you all so much for being there - it hit me in the heart and I'm very grateful for you all! I also found one of my running friends around mile 16 and we paced each other in. I wasn't going to leave my wingman. For those of you that have followed my story this cycle, you'll know that I had a lot of ups and downs. I expected to be in a hurt locker for this one, but instead I surrendered to my higher power and let him pave the way. In fact, I felt good enough to keep going! While this isn't a PR, it's a lesson in running happy and putting the bullshit aside. Thank you all for your encouragement, your best wishes and tips - I'm grateful for being part of this running community and that I'm able to share my experiences with you. And that is the last long run of this cycle. My Garmin pooed out, but I did 10 easy miles. It was a straight out and back and I can't even tell you how many times I've ran this route - a lot. And I know I'll run it many more times. It's a gift to get to do this and this training cycle really drove that point home. Honestly, it's been rough but at the same time it's been nice to just let go. To let go of strict paces, mile repeats, the rigid training plan that tells me to run this far or you'll fail. And then there's the PR....... to let all of that go and just enjoy it. It's a lot of pressure that I/we put on ourselves and honestly, I don't need that in my life. Lord knows that I get enough of that already. Now, I'd love a PR and to get into Boston, but for now, I'm going to enjoy the ride and see what happens. "Burn me down to cinders, I will reignite". Seven days till Monumental.

Its a two-fer today. I wanted to do some trail running and mix in some road work. So, I went to the state park and made it happen. I did three and a half on the trail, changed shoes and did four more on the road. It's funny how the road felt very easy after running up those hills on the trail!

It was 42Β° this morning so the long sleeves made an appearance. I'm not ready for the cold gear yet but the morning air was wonderful! I've got less than three weeks before Monumental and I'm thinking about what a taper will look like. So far, I'm thinking it won't be much of a taper in order to keep some strength in my legs for the long haul. Sixer down for the day.

Longest run in a while. My run group organizes a 20 mile and 11 mile run every year called Run the Monon. This is a huge trail that spans Indy and some surrounding cities. So, they bussed us up to a drop off point and we had to run to downtown Indianapolis where food is waiting. They also supply water stops the whole trip - very cool! My quads are pretty sore but my injury area isn't bad at all. I was lifting my legs lot more to make sure my glutes were firing the whole time. As you scroll through these pictures, you'll notice one key thing: I'm smiling the whole time. I went into this race giving zero shits about my pace and time and you know what? I had a lot of fun! I picked a pacer and just hung around that pace. I saw plenty of friends racing and even some of you Indy Instagrammers out there - it was a really cool seeing everyone! It's race weekend! Get excited! Tomorrow's race is the Indy Half at Ft. Benjamin Harrison state park. It's argueably the most beautiful race course in Indy with some of the worst hills πŸ˜‰ The last time I ran this race, I set a new PR of 1:31 and I learned that I was stronger than I thought. With everything going on, I just can't run this as hard as I'd like without doing some damage. So now that I have a new PR from my spring trifecta, I've decided to use this race as a victory lap. I'm not going to worry about time which will be a little hard - I tend to lock into race mode and that would be bad right now. Hopefully smart decisions make for better futures. This is the furthest I've ran since July. The last time I ran this far I couldn't really walk for two days, so today's run felt like a total redemption run. I've been feeling pretty good this week and continued to feel ok going into this workout. I knew this was a risky move, but everything was clicking and my injury wasn't flaring up. I felt my quads and glutes firing and tried to keep a conservative pace throughout. When I finished, I could walk just fine and I don't feel anything outside of normal soreness. Hopefully it stays that way. I'll have to make some decisions in the next couple of weeks in regards to my fall schedule, but meh, that's for future Andrew to handle. #trusttheprocess

A couple of nights ago, I had a dream that I was being chased by velociraptors. I found myself in a house where everything was slick and it was tough to move around. There was a guy there that said "it's like that because this place is raptor proof". Weird. I hope you all have a raptor-free Friday!

I have a small confession. For the past few months, I've ...I've.......I've.....given up eating beef, chicken, and pork. Well, pretty much all meat except for fish. After doing a lot of research and talking to lots of people, I transitioned to a plant based diet back in July. It was a fairly easy transition for me and I've discovered a lot of tasty food. It feels great! Anyone else out there plant based?

One thing I really like about the running community is that you can share your wins and your lessons with others that know the process and have experienced it at some level. It keeps us engaged and empathetic to each other's journey while being mindful of our own situation. This is just a little reminder that pace, splits, PRs, and such don't really matter as much as just going out and enjoying yourself and perhaps the company of other runners. Happy Monday folks.

What a day! It's really freaking hot here so the short shorts came out. Whatever it takes to stay cool in this heat. 😊😊 I met up with my run group and am happy to report that was a good run. I didn't experience any of the pain that I've been having so I'm chalking it up to progress. Just like I said in my IG story yesterday, I have plenty of work to do and I don't consider myself healed, but I think I can say that I'm recovering πŸ˜‰ I'm nowhere near my spring performance level but as this continues, I know I can get it back in time. Besides, that's not really the point. Whoever said "trust the process" is right, even for us stubborn runners. I believe this is side angle pose, and it feels amazing! Seriously, yoga has been a game changer for me. It helps a lot and you all should try it!

It’s the first day of Fall and I’m still sweating my booty off! I went for a run last night and came back absolutely drenched. That happens when it’s 94 degrees! I’ll spare you the boy band joke, but I’ll tell ya, It’s the Hardest Thing to pass up. See what I did there? πŸ˜‚ Anywho, I broke out the Rescue Hydration from Skratch Labs ( @skratchlabs ) to ramp up my hydration recovery. It’s more concentrated than the normal mix and while I wasn’t out running 20 Miles, I felt like I needed to play it safe. Ps, I hear it’s great for hangovers.......#justsaying
