Who here loves ketchup? If you're anything like me, it's a staple in your diet.

🍅Did you know that tomatoes have other benefits than simply making delicious ketchup? A study by Vinha et al. (2014) found that by adding one tomato a day (about 3oz) before lunch for 30 days, fasting blood glucose improved. In addition, without any change in diet, the subjects lost about 2.5 lbs in body weight, and over 3% body fat while maintaining lean muscle!

💪🏽This suggests that the phenols in tomatoes may be beneficial for reducing blood glucose, which will help improve body composition by reducing body fat and maintaining lean muscle mass!

Athletes who love the rush of adrenaline may also be getting a huge rush of dopamine. Dopamine is most notably responsible for feelings of pleasure but it is also a precursor to epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine; which are the hormones and neurotransmitters responsible for the “fight, or-flight” response. This would suggest that extreme sports athletes who “love the rush” are extra sensitive to the release of dopamine and may release more dopamine than the average person when their adrenal system is aroused.

California Style Spaghetti & Meatballs
Makes: 2 servings
🔹Ingredients:
6oz lean ground beef
1 zucchini, noodled
1 squash, noodled
1 orange bell pepper, sliced
1 small tomato, diced
1 avocado, mashed
¼ small yellow onion, chopped
1 tsp salt
1 tsp garlic powder
1oz parmesan, grated
1 tbsp coconut oil
Salt & pepper to taste
🔹Method:
1️⃣ Preheat oven to 200ºF and in a bowl combine ground beef, yellow onion, salt, and garlic powder, then divide into 6-1 ounce meatballs. Cook the meatballs in a saute pan over medium heat until the outsides are seared, then put in the oven to finish.
2️⃣ In the same sauté pan that the meatballs were cooked, heat coconut over medium heat, add in noodled zucchini and squash, bell pepper, and tomato, sauté for 3-4 minutes, then reduce heat to-low, simmer for ~5 minutes, then season to taste with salt and pepper.
3️⃣ While the meatballs and zucchini are cooking, mash the avocado until smooth.
4️⃣ When the meatballs are finished plate with zucchini noodles and mashed avocado, then enjoy!

Beach volleyball players are unable to produce as much power as traditional volleyball players when they jump due to the nature of the sand, and It takes more time for a beach volleyball player to develop force for a vertical jump. Because a beach volleyball player has to put more time and active effort into a jump without the same amount of power or jump height as a traditional volleyball player, their training should focus more on overall lower body strength and the time that it takes to develop that strength for a jump. They do not necessarily need to train for maximum power, since they are unable to achieve this in real-time competition scenarios.

Reactive strength is a defined as an athletes ability to utilize a fast stretch shortening cycle. In other words, an athletes ability to change quickly from an eccentric to concentric contraction and how high they are able to jump while spending the smallest amount of time on the ground as possible. In basketball, players are required to jump as high as possible in very short time frames.

Today’s topic in The Muscle PhD Academy builds on hamstrings training. Research shows that the inner hamstrings are the most activated (nearly 110 % of a maximal static contraction) followed by the outer hamstrings (80 %). This is because sprinting heavily relies on hip extension (driving your leg backwards). Thus, sprints can be a powerful tool to develop both the hamstrings and glutes which are also hip extensors.
