Welcome back to Mindset Monday! I hope everyone had a great weekend.
Today we’re going to talk about acting confident!
Acting confident can help trick your mind into feeling confident. And if your mind thinks you feel confident… before long you *will* be confident! One way to do this is to do a power pose. This idea of power posing was made popular by Amy Cuddy in her Ted Talk. Link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks-_Mh1QhMc
Kara Goucher (famous and incredible US runner) power poses at the start line of her races. In her recently-released book “Strong,” she says: “when I look at photos of myself on the starting line, I am always standing tall and looking straight ahead. While others move around, shaking their legs and arms, I choose to stand still.” (I HIGHLY recommend “Strong!” You can find it at your local bookseller or online.) Take a minute to practice this. (Remember, with all the mindset readjustment exercises, we need to practice them before we need them!) Read these directions, then put your phone down and DO IT!
Stand tall. Place your feet shoulder width apart. Place your hands on your hips, shoulders back, chest out, and breathe deep. Breathe all the way into your stomach, then slowly breathe out, emptying your lungs as much as is comfortable. Look straight ahead. Smile. Repeat the words you came up with in last week’s Mindset Monday to yourself (or out loud, if you’re feeling confident). You could even say them as affirmations, like “I am strong, I am awesome, I am capable.” Powerfully pose for about two minutes.
Try this at your next race, or in your office next time you need a big boost of confidence.
And don’t forget to join us next Monday!
