“Where words fail, music speaks” ~Hans Christian Andersen
Watching this little one pluck through Yankee Doodle totally takes me back to my youth piano days... I sure hope she sticks with it unlike her momma. If she is anything like her daddy, music pulses wild through her veins.

Speak through your songs my love...

One of the main reasons that kids get frustrated with practice is because they think that they shoudl be able to play perfectly after one round of practice. As parents too, we tend to expect that practice should help them become perfect at what they do and if they are not able to achieve that level of perfection there must be something wrong with them. In reality however, that is not the case. the main aim of practice is to make progress not to become instantaneously perfect. If we can keep that in mind then and teach our kids the same, then practice time will pass more pleasantly with less frustrations and children will happier and more likely to practice willingly. Don't wait till kids master a piece or become perfect at playing piano before you applaude them for their hard work. Remember that practice can seem very boring to a child and even though you may have explained to them how important it is, they still may not be very enthusiastic about it. Yet, if your child is practicing, it means that he/she is doing what he/she thinks you would like to see. Therefore, just acknowledging how hard piano practice can be and rewarding your child for practicing can help keep him/her motivated and returning daily for more piano practice. Sometimes, children shy away from practice because the piece that they have to learn before the next piano lesson is very hard and complicated. In order to avoid this from being a problem it is then important to ensure that the child looks through the piece to be practiced first, marks out the difficult areas and tries to master each part individually one at a time in bite sized pieces before moving to the next section. Have you heard this saying - most great musicians and sportsmen alike say that 2% of their success came from inspiration and 98% from perspiration. In other words it means that while talent and creativity are all required to succeed, without hard work, grit and sheer determination, the success they achieved would never be possible. Furthermore there is research to show that when a talanted player who doesn't work hard and putting in the hours required is pitted against one that does in fact work hard but doesn't have as much talent, often the latter individual ends up performing much better. So, as we can see, practice is hard work but without it all the talent in the world would be useless. Celebrating every single victory, even if it is as minute as getting just one single measure of music right - when the child used to get it wrong in the past, would help to motivate your child to continue to practice and work hard. Remember no victory is too small to celebrate and doing things like celebrating and acknowleding your child will help make him/her feel more apreciated and thereofre, will ensure that he/she will continue to practice. Doing this one thing can often make a huge difference and increase your child's chances of working to practice more often. If you have a kid at home that is working hard to master an instrument, you know as well as I do how difficult it could be to get them to practice, so if you simply applaud your child for practicing and focus only on the progress that has been made and celebrate every victory barring none and cheer your child even when no progress has been made (simply for practicing and making it a habit) you will help your child practice daily and before you know it, it will become a habit. Have you heard this saying - most great musicians and sportsmen alike say that 2% of their success came from inspiration and 98% from perspiration.
