Day tour to Mtskheta. 24 March 2017.
Mtskheta is the oldest city in Georgia, a lot of building in this town are part of UNESCO Cultural heritage site.
Btw, if you wonder how to pronounce Mtskheta, it’s skéta, dont bother to read the Mt in front of its word name 😁
So, that day i tour around the old city, and i visited jvari monastery, svetitskhoveli cathedral, and samtavro monastery. And a wine tour and degustation at the end of the trip.
If you are a christian, i think you will really love georgia, as it was a lot of monastery here that dates from 3rd century BC until 11th century. And i also see a lot of christian people do pilgrimage journey here.
The guide also told me that svetitskhoveli cathedral was the main pilgrimage place of the Silk Road, the burial place of the Jesus Christ's Robe (yes, you read it right, the robe that Jesus Christ wore himself was kept there in Svetitskhoveli cathedral) and there are also the tomb of Georgian Kings place there.
Aside from the cathedral, i really like jvari monastery, it’s place is on top of the hill, and you can see a beautiful city view from there.
Picture above was from samtavro monastery, and i have to tell you, there are mummy of famous georgian monk named Gabrieli buried inside, we cant see its face as the mummy was covered with robe all over its body and kept closed on glass coffin. A lot of people read the bible and pray to him. And sadly, no picture allowed.
