In the marine world, to claim an organism is the most beautiful, is a dangerous claim to make, where life has diversified into a multitude of incredible shapes and colours. Some might argue however, that this Saddled Snake-Eel (Ophichthus bonaparti) is certainly a contender for the fish category. This species is thought to have been named after Napoleon (yes, that french revolutionary) over 150 years ago, hence its other common name, the 'Napoleon Snake-Eel'. Like most snake eels, this species buries its body in a hole in the sand and waits for unsuspecting prey such as smaller crustaceans and fish, to stray close enough. This was another one of the highlights of my recent trip to #Anilao, Philippines.
