The court cards of the Mamluk playing cards are quite different from typical modern playing cards in that they do not have a portrait of the person they represent. Instead, the cards are named, and they also have mottoes, typically wishing the holder luck or congratulating him on having such a good card!

This is a tradition I followed in designing the Viceroys cards ... #playingcards #mamluk #mamlukplayingcards #topkapi #viceroys#viceroysplayingcards #customplayingcards #cardart #playingcardart #kingofspades #tarothistory #playingcardhistory #design #cardcollection #cartamundi #cardgames #king #spades

Today's Energy: Valet de Trèfle
Le #valetdetrèfle (or the #pageofstaves) represents an old soul with the exuberance of youth. Set things in motion and don't be afraid of adventure. But do your research first; be wary of repeating past mistakes. It may force you to work towards shorter term goals, but a journey is traveled in miles not destinations.

Tarot Deck: Baptiste Paul Grimaud Le Jeu de Tarot
This deck is typically used for a popular trick-taking card game in France, which harkens back to tarot's origins of being used for gambling rather than (or in addition to) divination. Baptiste Paul Grimaud started a card publishing factory that would eventually print the still-popular Tarot de Marseille deck.

A long waited, almost lost friend.
This is a very mysterious piece of #TarotHistory
The Lombard Tarocchi of Angelo Valla, made in Trieste, 1790.
Very little is known about this beautifully odd deck. With very sensible drawings (See the very delicate devil card, as already seen before in the Giacomo Zoni Tarocchi).
The Moon card is an orb with a very feminine face also, as in french early Tarots, but with a crescent underneath her (Phoenician/Babylonian symbolism, perhaps?)
For an early tarot deck, its expressions are very sensitive and delicate, but all traditional.
This is a book by some Peter Ortmann called "The Lombardische Tarot" published in 1998. Very easy to find and with decent price in Ebay Denmark. I totally recommend for the serious collectors! And please, ignore the cardstock. You may never know when you'll be able to find such darksome treasure!
Blessings!!!

Irving Penn, "The Tarot Reader” was made for illustration in the October 15, 1949 issue of “Vogue” magazine and relates to a group of images from that year in which the photographer explored constructing images out of shades of tonalities and silhouettes. #tarothistory #tarotlondon #tarotreading #tarot #cartomancy #taroticonography #tarotofinstagram #vogue #irvingpenn #divination

I've been dipping into some #tarothistory today, carrying this book to kid's morning activities and then to the park. It's inspired me to dig out my long neglected #grandetteilla. One of the first
#tarotdecks I ever bought, over twenty years ago. I also came across this little #tarotdemarseille, with added numerology, just the thing to carry in my bag and refresh my long standing connection to this deck. The legend that is Pamela ‘Pixie’ Colman Smith (1878 to 1951) Illustrator of the famous ‘Rider Waite’ tarot (published 1910) who was sadly never really recognised for her contribution to tarot during her life time. However she has gained recognition since the republication of the deck in the 1970s and her paintings have become a major influence for many contemporary tarot decks.

Temperence, from the I Tarocchi Visconti Sforza.

This particular deck is not really one that I read with often...but the images are so interesting and the historical significance makes it one that I love to have in my collection.

"The Fool has historically been cast as cultural archetype for wild and savage enlightenment, unobtainable through rational means. As the Misero and the Matto, the Fool contains the aggregated characteristics of the illuminated melancholic, the learned ignoramus, the prophetic savant and semi-human forest being. For the occultist, the Fool symbolises the spiritually awakened 'air-head' whose mind, drifting skyward in pursuit of gnosis, is attuned to a higher plane", Valentin Wolfstein, "The Mystic Fool. From Tarot to an Ideal of Ascendance". The figure above is an image of the Beggar-Alchemist, Mellon MS 41 (a Ripley Scroll), circa 1570, Beinecke Library, Yale University.

Rhenan Tarot. Ferd. Piatnik&Söhne of Vienna issued in 1985 a facsimile of a Tarot deck by Ignaz Krebs of Freiburg am Brisgau, Germany. Krebs was a cardmaker of the eighteen century. The deck was originally printed with woodblocks and hand-coloured by stencils. The initials PC on the front of the chariot on card VII are probably those of the carver of the woodblocks. The Rhenan Tarot is a Tarot of Marseilles, but the maker's name and city appear on the two of cups, rather than on the two of coins as is customary for Tarot of Marseilles decks. #tarothistory #tarotlondon #tarotreading #tarot #cartomancy #taroticonography #tarotofinstagram #tarotdemarseille #tarottribe
