Universal Carrier 🇬🇧
Otherwise known as the Bren gun carrier.
The universal carrier is exactly that, a small vehicle for carrying things, be it men, supplies, or heavier weaponry. The origins of the vehicle lie in the early Carden-Loyd tankettes of the 1930's, with the Mk.4 being the base of the Universal Carrier.
Compared to the Carden-Loyd Mk.4 tankette, the UC is larger, with a driver and machine gunner up front and a large open area at the rear for up to five riflemen or many other kinds of loads. Power came from a Ford V8 petrol engine producing 85bhp, but with a weight of only 3-4tons depending on load, it is a rather agile vehicle. Suspension is a simple Horstmann type bogies, simple and rugged but the passengers have to hold on for dear life over rough ground.
A huge number were built from the mid 30's all the way up until 1945. They served the British and Commonwealth armies as scouts, transports, and mobile weapons carriers. Armour is minimal, but they could carry a variety of weapons, most common a single Bren gun, but possible setups included a Boys anti tank rifle, a mortar or even (for a modified commonwealth version) the QF 2pdr (40mm) gun.
Due to so many being built, around 57,000 between 1934-45, many found their way into various museums and private collectors worldwide.
