When I moved (back) to Reston, in 2000, after several years in Fairfax, the *only* thing I wasn't thrilled about was the total lack of Pho options. Within a year, Pho 75 opened at the once-bustling Tall Oaks plaza. It quickly became a weekly (and sometimes twice or thrice weekly) excursion and while the entire menu was legit, I invariably had to get my noodle soup fix, even during the most humid days of VA summer. The owner, pictured here, is a man of few words, but we had our moments and, over time, we could communicate without words. And we gradually got to know each other, and my friends always got kick out of our intimate routine: the fist bump, the way he'd nod at me instead of taking my other, the way he always said "see you tomorrow" when I left and, if it was lunch, I'd say "if not tonight." He enjoyed that every single time and I said it a lot over the last 16 years. All great things must pass, and today is Pho 75's last, as Tall Oaks plaza is finally about to undergo an egregiously overdue redesign. Naturally, I had to go pay my respects and savor a final bowl of savory broth. I'm heartened to know I can visit his other, newer location in Herndon, but of course it won't be the same. And how could it be?
