From The Watermen Project Founder, William Winram @williamwinram - Finally! For seven years I have put time, sweat and tears into studying great white sharks in Guadalupe Island. Now the first results of our tagging efforst have been published. The great white shark is one of my favorite animals on this planet and I am happy to be able to use my skillset to study and protect sharks for future generations to enjoy a balanced ocean! https://animalbiotelemetry.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s40317-016-0106-7 "We found that: (1) juvenile white sharks remained close to the island throughout the day between the surface and 50 m depth in warm waters (from 14 to 20 °C), whereas the adults moved offshore into deep waters during the day and stayed close to the island during the night presenting a broader tolerance of colder waters (from 9 to 20 °C); (2) tagged white sharks had a positive correlation between total length and habitat range, and the core areas of adults were related to pinniped colonies; (3) adults patrolled in deep waters in November and December when the northern elephant seals (NESs) returned back to the island for pupping with their mean mass higher than during the winter post-breeding migration; (4) tagged juvenile white sharks remained near the island for 12–14 months before departing; and (5) tagged subadults undertook coastal migrations before starting their offshore migrations." @watermenproject @fredbuyle @lukaswaterman @iucn_marine @theterramarproject @oceanunite @lonelywhale #MakeASplash #Sharks #Shark #Ocean #Tagging #WhiteShark #Science #Biology #Conservation #Nature #Wildlife #Earth #Animals #Wild #Adventure #Action #Sea #Guadalupe #Video #Expedition #Explore #Diving #Freediving All of our freediving with great white sharks is permitted for our scientific work with the animals both by the local and federal Mexican government. Otherwise diving outside of the cage is illegal at the island, for the safety of everyone involved. We dive with appropriate safety protocols and with respect for the sharks. Please respect legislation and guidelines when you dive!
