Projecting and simulating the future is a futile endeavour. The future will not produce the happiness that we seek, because happiness is only ever experienced here and now. We need to learn how to focus our attention in the present, without expecting, desiring or fearing a future outcome, in order for us to experience an unconditional happiness that is not dependant on desired circumstances for its fulfilment. The only opportunity we have to experience life is right here and now. By imagining a better version of now and desiring that future situation, we loose sight of all there is to appreciate in the present situation. Desire breeds suffering. Because we crave something that isn't present, we negate the present experience from being able to provide us with happiness. The same happiness that we seek in the fulfilment of our desire. And so, we spiral on a perpetual wheel of seeking that never reaches the destination we envisage, because happiness is available to be illumined, here and now, not in the imaginary future.
