❄️💀❄️ #DecVinylWorship Day 13: Highly anticipated but disappointing record. After a string of excellent releases in quick succession in the late 90s and early 00s, Symphony X had started to make their fans wait... and wait and wait for new albums. Five long years after The Odyssey, we were finally treated with one of the band's heaviest, most furious albums to date, Paradise Lost. Another four years of waiting after that, in 2011 I was eagerly anticipating their next release, Iconoclast.
There were rumours it would be a double-album, a first for the band, and I was even more excited because their more ambitious releases were some of my favourites. When it finally came out, I discovered you only got the full double-album if you bought the special edition, while the standard version was missing 3 tracks. Running at about 83 minutes though, the full special edition was just a few minutes longer than my longest single CD album. And while I love long songs and long concept albums, this one just seemed to drag.
I only ended up listening to the album a handful of times (if that), and I'm not even sure what I've done with the CD -- this is the first time I've looked for it in the 6 years since I bought it lol. Maybe the standard version is more streamlined, I probably should give it another chance one day. But it soured me so much on the band that I've only streamed their most recent album, Underworld (2015) just once, and I can't remember anything about it. I'll just keep happily listening to the rest of their excellent discography!
