The Hogland Invasion was launched on the 15th of September 1944. Politically the timing was perfect for the Finns, since that was the date they should start fighting the Germans, if wanting to obey the Soviet demands.
.
However, the offensive didn't cut the connections between Finns and Germans. Finnish liaison officer Lt. Col. Haahti negotiated with Generaloberst Rendulic in the Rovaniemi city and they e.g. agreed the German retreating schedule.
.
Interesting detail: The Finnish Supreme HQ informed the Germans that destroying the bridges will be ok, since that could be used as an excuse for slow advancing of the Finnish troops. They even stated that the bridges will be repaired having load capacity for light vehicles only.

Today 73 years ago, on the 15th of September 1944, the Germans launched the Unternehmen Tanne Ost (Invasion of the Gogland Island).
.
Their purpose was to secure their northern flank of the Heeresgruppe Nord, which was struggling under the Soviet main attack in the Estonia.
.
When they invaded, the Finns repelled the attack, supported by the Soviets.

Two of my recent posts described the Finnish War. 135 years later Finland was, again, facing a crisis.
.
According to the terms of the Moscow Armistice Pact they had to either to intern the German troops still positioned in the country or fight them.
.
At the time the Germans assumed that the Soviets will attack them and occupy Finland - and the Finns thought so, too. What the Germans didn't expect was that the Finns will fight back when attacked.
.
This pic from the Nietjärvi area depicts quite well the state of mind among the Finnish troops, imho:

"I will not fight any damned battle, goddamit."

Yet they did. Unternehmen Tanne Ost (the Invasion of Gogland Island) will be launched on the 15th of September 1944.

Today 75 years ago, at 4.30 PM on the 28th of March 1942, the Finns arranged a victory parade in the Suurkylä village, Gogland Island.
.
Maj. Gen. Aaro Pajari was later critizised about the desicion, since some elements of the Finnish task forces were still fighting the Soviets and the risk of an aerial attack was high. During the parade the Red Airforce attacked with 29 planes. 12 Finnish fighters engaged the enemy, downing 18 of them without own losses.
.
The island was defended by a battalion, consisting of three rifle companies, an MG company and an AT platoon with 45 mm guns. The estimated Soviet losses were 213 fallen and 36 captured. Finnish radio intelligence informed afterwards that some 265 managed to reach the Lavansaari Island. Finns lost 61 fallen, two missing and 109 wounded.

When invading the Gogland Island on the 27th of March 1942 the Finns had formed two task forces. Detachment S was commanded by Lt. Col. L. Sotisaari, and it was responsible for the main strike from the west. Maj. M. Miettinen's Task Force M was supposed to demonstrate an attack from the east and secure the perimeter. This pic depicts the command post of the Task Force M.

Interesting detail: the Finnish Flying Regiments 3 and 4 supported the troops with their 67 aircraft. At the time that was one third of the Finnish Airforce.

Today 75 years ago the Finns had captured the Gogland Island on the Gulf of Finland. Their recon patrols spotted some Soviets on the Tytärsaari Island, some 20 kilometers south-east from Gogland.
.
During the next two days the enemy, however, abandoned the island, so the Finns sent there one rifle company, a jaeger platoon and an MG squad, 275 men and 32 horses, on the 1st of April at 10 PM. The detachment arrived the island in the dawn of the 2nd, and was immediately engaged by a Soviet battalion, which had approached the area from the Lavansaari Island.
.
The Soviet attack was repelled, but the story continues with the Germans on the 8th of April, so stay tuned.

Women at war

Air surveillance lottas posing at the Suomenlinna sea fortress on the 23rd of July 1943.
.
The Finnish air surveillance based on the WWI technology 'til the 27th of April 1943, when the first German Freya "Raija" LZ radar was taken in use at the Malmi airfield in the Helsinki city. Raija was tested on the 23rd and an aircraft was detected. Messerschmitt Bf-109 pilot Tuominen took off from Malmi and soon an enemy Pe-2 divebomber was downed.
.
That wasn't, however, the first Finnish radar aided aerial victory. On the 24th of March 1943 the Germans positioned in Tallinn, Estonia, alarmed the Finns and Capt. Ervi and Lentomestari Juutilainen were guided to engage. Ilmari "Illu" Juutilainen downed a Pe-2 some ten kilometers westwards from the Gogland Island.

Finally ran into this book on a very interesting subject. #suursaari #gogland #högland #hogland #suursaar #history #Finland #gulfoffinland
